COLLEGE RESEARCH MY SOLVE LU Head of Advisory Council Ex- pects Students to Make Showing. Th2 Andings of the student body of | ®hus country on the liquor situation are expected to be more conclusive than those of the Wickersham commission, in the view of Dr. Emory R. Johnson of the University of Pennsylvania, who is at the head of this new incursion into the controversial realm of pro- ‘hibition. Associated with Dr. Johnson are eight other distinguished educators, one | & woman, constituting the “Prohibition | Advisory Research Council” named two weeks ago by Prohibition Director Woodcock to devise a program of re- search for college graduates in seek- ing their masters’ and doctors’ degr They wound up their studies here last night. Each will devise a re- search program that will be submit- ted to Chairman Johnson. | General Subject Covered. Tt will cover this general subject, “What Is Really Happening in the Hnl'fd States as a Result of Prohibi- on?” Dr. Johnson, dean of the thrton‘ School of Commerce and Finance of the University of Pennsylvania, was op- timistic over what may be accom- plished. “I believe this method will be more effective in determining the effects of the eighteenth amendment than w: that of the Wickersham commissio he said. “The members of that commission,” he added, “were studying law enforce- ment. The graduate students will be | furnishing more specific data as to fust | what has been the effect of prohibition. Further, their study will be carried on in an atmosphere of research.” Unbiased in Attitude. Attorney General Mitchell told news- paper men after his conference with the group that he was assured they were unbiased in their attitude on prohibi- tion, and that no interference would | be made by Government officials in | their work. “I made no suggestions to them,” the Attorney General said. “On the con- trary, I told them their work was not subject to any control or suggestion by me or by the Prohibition Bureau. “In fact, their program for research would be useless unless it was worked out in perfect independence. Done in that fashion, however, we hope to get | information that will be helpful to us and to the general public.” | Dr. Sohnson sald U e task of wo‘r‘king; out a program n 5o split up | that each member of the council could | suggest research in fields in which he himself was expert. When all the sug. gestions are received, he said, they will be amalgamated into one.
