Axl4 Cene STEEL INDUSTRY - FAILS TO IMPROVE Recent Insmute Meeting Hasl Little or No Effect on Business. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 27.—Neither the tempo of buying nor the trend of prices and praduction has been noticeably af- fected by the frank airing of views at the recent meeting of the American Iron & Steel Institute, Iron Age will say to- lr:;g!'mw in its weekly review of the steel ustry. “Demand remains sluggish,” the Re- view nyl. “and in aggregate con-; tinues to taper; prices in scattersd in- stances have given further ground, but in the main are unresponsive, owing to the cearth of new business; output is still slowly declining. “Sentimentally, however, the effect of bringing the industry’s difficulties rout into the open has been salutary. Steel executives were jolted into a fuller real- ization of their present straits and the consequences of a further aggravation of market mstability. Their apprehen- sions have been hsighte: by the un- checked risc of costs as mill output grows more intermittent. Prospects Not So Good. Aannu current specifications for such products as sheets, strips, cold- finished bars and wire products are hardly sufficient to justify more than a two-day-a-week operation. Releases in othér products offer no promise of early rovement. NEW YORK, May 27.—The following is & summary of important corporaticn news prepared by the Standard Statis- ties Co., Inc, New York, for the Asso- clated Press: News Trend. The 7,938 barrel increase in daily av- erage crude oil output, estimated yes- terday by the Ofl and Gas Journal, was somewhat under the estimate released today by the American Petrcleum In- stitute, which places the increase in Gafly average at 10,350 barrels over the week before to & total of 2,437,150 bar- ly offset by a decrease of 31,350 Oklahca. It will be remembered that last week tbh:n parucular fl‘:‘uman was reversed, when a gain over ek in’ Ofiatioma ‘wa than offset by a larger reduction in East With Texas. this week’s report of higher production in East Texas, the Humble Refining Co. announced a drastic mmulcu&otlocenn:mulln | unc Railway freight car loadings for the week ended May 16 increased 283 cars above the week before to a total of 747,732, Although this report shows an actual increase, it becomes less fa- vorable than at first apparent, when |4t s realized that the normai trend | | present proration schedules there most ertain. sharper upward movement. The freight .chulflelllon covering merchandise in | less-than-carload-lots, including much | of the finished products shipped, failed | notably to participate in week's | gain, as did also live stock. Steel mill operations throughout the country, as indicated by steel ingot output, remained at about the same level as last week, around 44 per cent of e-pulfl according to the Iron Age. leveling of operations #fter last week's decline of 2 per cent is some- what encouraging, though the present low rate of operations cannot be wn- sidered favorable. It is reported tha the frank remarks of the steel Iuders in conference had very little effect on steel buying or prices. The Companies. RICHARDSON. Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, May 27.—Extreme weakness in junior railroad bonds again featured bond trading today. ‘The main factor was a renewed sell- ing wave in rail stocks on the big board, following the omission of the Pere Marquette common dividend. While this, as an isolated instance, might not ordinarily have much effect, it came as one of a long series of such omissions or reductions and this par- ticular one affects Alleghany Corpora- tion and Chesapeake Corporation, own- ers of large blocks of Pere Marquette stock. Some of it is pledged as col- lateral behind Alleghany 5s wnd these were weak today. So were Chesapeake Corporation 5s. Another bad spot in the railroad list was the declines ranging from 2 to 3 points in St. Louis-San Francisco is- sues. The 43;5 dropped below 50 to a new record low for the first time. The General 6s and 5s, which mature July 1, sagged to prices that reflected wide- spread doubt as to the refinancing plans for the $9,500,000 of 5s and 6s outstanding. The influence of these drops caused heavy declines in mlny other issues. Some comfort might conceivably be derived from the fact that prices were widely lower on comparatively small ‘The most. ’Wldely affected issues were Boston & Maine 5s, Chicago & Eastern Illinois 5s, St’ Paul 5s, Rock Island A 4%s, Denver & Rio Grande Western 5s, Erle 5s, Iliinois Central 4%s. Missouri-Pacific 5s and general 4s. New York Central 415s, Nickel Plate 4138, Pennsylvania 41,s, Pere Mar- 4 |auette 4)2s and Western Maryland 51as. Even some of the more conservative carrier mortgages were subjected to liquidation by over cautious investors. Union Pacific first 45 dropped over half point. Atchison General 45 were off fractionally, as were Baltimore & Ohio first 4s. Prime issues such as Am!l‘lcln ‘Tele- phone 58 and Consolidated Gas 515s maintained their levels, in spite of t.he weak tone. There were a few small gains in issues like American 1. G. Chemical 5l5s, International Match 5s, and McKesson & Robbins 515s, but these (Jere partly lost in later trading, and, in general, the whole list had & heavy tone. Consolidated Gas of New. York of- fered $60,000,000 of 20-year 4}, per cent debenture bonds prieed at 101. The bonds were reported quickly sold. The company will announce the offer- ing of about $50,000,000 of common stock at $100 par and without par within the next few weeks, United States Government issues were strong. So were municipals. In spite of a number of statements by bankers and foreign bond experts, in- cluding such a noted authority as Prof. E. | W. Kemmerer, who recently completed economic studies in South America, the liquidation of foreign dollar bonds was about as bad today as on any day in the past 18 months. The price declines were extravagant though the volume of sales was only of moderate proportions. (Copyright, 1931.) Washmgton Stock Exchange SALES. Wash. Ry. & E.
