TA—10 B UHLIREN WIN SPELLING PREES Ward Randall, 12, of lllinois, Wins Championship by Spelling “Foulard.” By the Associated Press. ‘Twenty-three children are free from the bogey of words and syllables they juggled to win prizes of from $25 to $1,000 in the Seventh Annual National Spelling Bee. Twelve-year-old Ward Randall of White Hall, Ilinois, is the champlon. He defeated Charles Michel, 14, of Bel- laire, Ohio, yesterday, on the spelling of “foulard” to win the two trophies and $1,000 that went for first prize. Michel won $500, second prize. Luck Plays Part. Luck played its part in the contest for 13-year-old Aaron Butler, jr., of ‘Weir, Kans. Eliminated on “encroach- ment,” he came back into the contest after he had “happened” upon a dlc- tionary and found his spelling of the ‘word—*"incroachment”—to be permis- sible. The judges asked Aaron to spell ten hard words. He did, they read- mitted him, he finished fifth and won $75 instead of the $30 which he would have taken. Randall, who represented the White Hall Register-Republican, his home- town paper, said he was going to use the money for his education. Michel was sponsored by the Wheel- ing, W. Va,, News.
