At the Spring physical examination for all officers over 55 years old, Hughes passed with flying colors, but later decided that he would “take a little rest” after his 43 years in the department. Previous to that he had done a 3-year enlistment in the ‘Navy. He was given a pension of $100 per month. Other policemen retired at the same time were John J. Gier, harbor pre- cinct, and Willlam M. Gilfoyle, station clerk at the third precinct. Gier was retired on accoufit of age, at 63 years.| Gilfoyle was retired because of physical | disability. He is 52. Paul E. Daniels, an officer formerly | paid by the street car companies to| guard a railway crossing, was put on| the regular force as a radio operator. Brunker, chairman of the Chicago Safety Committee, to appear in an effort to prove statements attributed | to him concerning corruption in| “high places” of Chicago. | Chiet Justice John P. McGoorty of | the Criminal Court decided last night to instruct the special grand Jury | investigating the alleged Politico- | Gangdom Alliance to issue a supoena | for Bunker who was quoted by the Boston Post as saying that 80 per cent of Chicago judges are criminals. | Other statements attributed to him | were that Al Capone has 6,000 cit; State and Federal officials on his pi roll and at the slayers of Alfred Lingle, Triune reporter, were being covered up. Replying to this, State’s attorney John A. Swanscn said: “My only answer to Mr. Brunker is I already have a man in the county jail indicted for the murder of Lingle.” His reference was to Leo V.
