ALEXANDRIA, Va, January 31— By almost unanimous action, the City Bchool Board here tonight voted to ‘ peverse itself, rescinded its action in for the transfer of Col. Clarence Deems, jr., professor of military science and tactics in_charge of local Ejh school cadets, and asked that the tter llhng for his transfer be ex- m%:d from the record. action was taken in executive session, which immediately followed a public 'meeting attended by approxi- mately 500 citizens, which filled the city council chamber where the meet- ing was held and overflowed into the hallway of the building. In the public meeting, at which mneither Col. Deems, nor Superintendent of Schools R. C. Bowdon, was present, speeches were made by Comdr. Sidney Well of the American Legion, on whose resolution the board acted, and b Prederick L. Flynn, H. F. Kenned: Capt. Mauchlin Niven, Charles smmp Capt. T. M. Hamilton and Dr. J. Ashton of the School Board. Capt. Niven declared in his speech that it was a question of retaining Col. Deems, who he said represented the Spirit of America, or of not supporting those traditions, by retaining Super- intendent of Schools Bowdon. The superintendent of schools has been accused of pacifistic tendencies. All members of the School Board, except Gardner L. Boothe, who is ill, were present at the meeting, which was prutded over by Chairman Urban 8. Held for Grand Jury.
