ST. ALBANS, Vt, December 18.—| | Vermont today mourned the passing of | i Frank L. Greene, her senior United States Scnator. He died at a hospital here yesterday after an operation for hernia Monday. Two sons, Stuart of Boston, and Capt. | Richard Greene, U. S. A., who is sta- | tioned at Fort Sill, Okla., were en route to thefr home here today. Capt. Greene planned to make most of the journey by airplane. | Senator Greene's wife and daughter, when he died. Hit by Bullet in 1924. Senator Greene had been partially paralyzed since when he was struck by a stray bullet fired in a gun fight between bootleggers and_prohibi- tion agents in Washington. For days his life was despaired o It was at this time that he showed his loyalty to his duty and his unfailing <upp"rt} of Calvin Coolidge, when he insisted on being carried into the Senats cham- ber to vote in support of President Coolidge’s veto of the bonus bill. His tright arm was paralyzed and cne leg affected by the wound. He was born here February 10, 1870, the son of Lester Bruce Greene, for | some_time secretary and treasurer of the Brotherhcod of Locomotive Engi- neers. His father's illness forced him to sell papers, run errands, act as a janitor and do farm work to ald in the support-of the family. Started as Reporter. In 1891 he became a reporter for the | St. Albans Daily Messenger and eight | years later was its editor. He enlisted in the Vermont National Guard in 1888 and rose from the ranks to a captaincy. At the outbreak of the Spanish-American war he recruited Company B, Ist giment, Vermont Volunteer Infantry, and at the close of war was commissioned a colonel and aide de camp on the staff of the Governor of Vermont. He entered the Senate in 1923 and two years ago was re-elected to-serve until 1935. Norwich University, at Northfield, Vt., | honored him in 1908 with a degree of master of arts and in 1915 with the de- gree of master of laws. He was a regent of the Smithsonian Institution from 1917 to 1923 and a trustes of the Ver- mont Soldiers Home. Funeral services will be held Satur- day morning at 11 o’clock in the Con- gregational Church here. Burial will be in St. Albans, CONGRESS TAKES ACTION. Committees Appointed by Both Houses to Attend Funeral. A delegation of members of the Sen- ate and House will go to Vermont to- morrow to attend the funeral of Senator Frank L. Greene. Edwin Thayer, secretary of the Senate, his desire not to have the Government put to the expense of sending a committee to his funeral when he died. In September, 1926, the secretary of the Senate received a letter from St. Albans, Vt., Senator Greene's home which head in part as follows: “T have been wanting to see you for some time and say that if I die I do not want the Government put to the expense of carrying Senators to my funeral. 11 any one wants to come, why, flgh! The Senator went on to say in the letter that he was getting better at that time, but wanted to make known this request to Col. Thayer.
