EXPEDIION FINDS ARTEW TENPLE Excavators Expect Even More Startling Discoveries in Transjordania. By the Assoclated Press JERUSALEM, December 18. — Th: Jewish Telegraphic Agency learns tha! & large colonnaded court and the beau- | tiful Temple of Artemis, one of the principal deities of Greek mythology, were uncovered yesterday at Jerash by the joint expedition of Yale University and ‘the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem, Jerash, the ancient Greek City of Gerasa, ih Transjordania, is believed to be the Biblical Ramoth Gilead. As late as the second and third centurles of the Christian era it was a flourishing | center of Greek civiliz: devoted to the special worship of Artemis, The ruins were found in 1806. The clearing was difficult, as the debris reached down 20 feet amid the magnificent stones that have fallen from the walls of the temple, one of the best reserved buildings of Roman times, ut the portico and corridors uncov- ered indicate that the base of the great altar will be found soon. Two fine mosaic floors with inscriptions were laid bare and hundreds of coins were turned up in the remains of buildings from Arab, Byzantine and Roman times. Later buildings and debris eover the newly discovered small temple with an altar and column base. Dozens of | lundered tombs complete with great ocks and chains, all containing the remains of interesting offerings for the dead, including terra cotta figurines, masks, lamps and a great variety of vessels, were also found. The pile in | front of Artemis’ Temple yielded a greal’ variety of lamps and terra cotta ikons. Dr. C. C. McCown, director of the | American School and the dean of the | Pacific School of Religion at Berkeley, | Calif, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that he and Prof. C.
