~Music and Musicians Reviews -and News of Capital's Programs. Three Artists Present At Morning Musicale. - HERE were no pianistic thun- derbolts unleashed yesterday morning at Mrs. Lawrence Townsend's forty-seventh mu- sicale. Neither was there any temperament or temper displayed. The music flowed along easily on familiar and un- Tuffled seas, pre- sented by three artists whose merits were abundantly on the surface of the program. Mme. Nina Koshetz so- prano, with mu- sical abilities cutside of her very consider- able vocalizings, such as being a pianist and composer as well; Alexander Brailowsky, pi- anist, and Paul Kochanski, violinist, were the artists at hand. While none of them rose to heights that would havs opened the Mayflower roof to find a pearly heaven waiting for them, they were all in fine feather, and full of music that a certain plumed lady at the festivitics described as “‘charming.” The most outstanding bits of the morning'’s music were Mme. Koshetz's interpretation of Russian songs. In these, the artist not only showed that warmth of voice, especially in the lower notes, which scem, often, scarcely to have an ending, but she brought with them a distinct per- sonality, which radiated more than satisfactorily on her audience and made the adhesion between stage and hall stronger than it has bein Especially in Nina Koshetz. there so far this vear. the Rimsky - Korsakoff ‘“Before Death,” taken from the “Tzar's Bride,” did Mme. Koshetz, with that Jong, drawn out humming note, which carries the song imperczpti- Riw i A silance, dn et fn o voioa that is sweet, not overstrong, but full of what might be called “mean- ingness.” Mr. Brailowsky opened the program with three Chopin numbers, which, being familiar in the extreme, pleased some and not so much others. He played them, however, Inxuriantly and as though thankful at being able to gravitats away from the more exciting modernists, accomplishing nothing of the latter except the de Falla “Ritual Dance of Fire.” Just reads: “Behold, how and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity,” could most cer- tainly be applied to the conformed unison with which thes¢”men sang last night at Memorial Continental Hall. Under the forcefulness of Clyde B. Aitchison, their leader for & number of years past, & program ranging from an old sea chanty to a composit'on of Schumann was de- livered with scarcely a mishap. There was precision in every move- ment made by the dirzctor, followed out with exactness by -the entire body. Cultured training in the art of male chorus presentation was appar- of the first he Song of ‘There were All Those Endearing Young Charms” and the Schumann *“The Lotus Flower.” The program reached a climax with the singing of a cantata, “Chorus_of Spirits and Hours,” by Dudley Buck. Here was opportunity to exhibit the full musical strength of the organization and .jt came through with flying colors. The in- cidental solo was by Ross Farrar, tenor. Mr. Farrar's tone was very good, but his voice was rather weak on the upper notes and he frequently resort>d to the use of cover tones. Orchestral accompaniment in this number was by -six members of the United States Marine Band, William F. Santleman, first violin; Joseph Miller, second violin; Lee Sanford, viola; John Auer, cello; Charles Biner, bass, and Clayton Lindsay, flute. “Ecce Quam Bonum,” & composi- tion written by P. Dominic Wae schwiler especially for the club, was the closing number on their part of the program. Throughout their numbers Robert L. Feuerstein ac- companied on the piano and Ger- tiude Smallwood Mockbee on the organ, Alma Kitchell, who is well known to Washingtonians, singing here fre- quently, was also given a rousing reception. She displayed the same feeling in her voice, an evident sin- cerity to please, which captivated her audience to such an extcnt that she was forced to give a number of encores. Listed for four selections, th= rendered 2bout twice that num- ber. She was particularly good in the singing of “O Pretres de Baal,” an aria from “Shanewis,” by Meyer- beer. B. W.
