= TWO SEA HEROES GIVEN PROMOTIONS .Capts. Randall and Fried to Take Over New Commands After January 1, 1931. By the Assoctated Press. NEW YORK, December 18.—Two * eaptains, heroes of thrilling sea rescues, Yesterday won promotions. Capt. A. B. “Rescue” Randall, credit- ed with saving 294 lives in midocean in four dangerous situations, will take over command of the United States lner Leviathan, world’s largest ship. He will be succeeded on his present ‘Vessel, the George Washington, by Capt. George Fried of the liner America, him- self a hero in two gallant rescues. Becomes Fleet Commodore. Capt. Randall, in addition to taking command of the biggest liner, will be- come commodore of the United States Lines’ fleet. He is 51 years old and has » spent 32 of these on the ocean, 22 in command of liners. During the World War he navigated convoys, work given only to the most skillful and daring skippers. For heroism during World War days he was recommended for the Distin- guished Service Medal and praised in & personal letter from Josephus Daniels, then Secretary of the Navy. Fried’s Record Noteworthy. Capt. Pried, 52, for 31 years a sea- man, commanded a ship carrying sup- plies during the war. He was made captain of the liner President Roose- t in 1922 and the America in 1928. He has numerous medals and other awards for bravery. Transfer of these men will be ef- fective in January when Capt. Harold A. Cunningham, now skipper of the Leviathan, returns from his last trip. WARSAW, December 18.—Charges of cruellty made against the govern- ment by National Democrats and Socialists in Diet interpellations Tues~ day reached the people of Poland yes- terday through the newspapers. The charges dealt with the treatment of 10 deputies who recently were jailed and have not been liberated. Some of the government papers stated that the officlals at the prison of Brest-Litovsk, where the deputies are confined, deserve punishment if the allegations are true. Details of tortures are described. One prisoner, Liebermann, was beaten while en route to the prison, suffering 20 wounds, the statements say. INDIANAPOLIS, December 18 (#).— An invalid for 35 years because of injuries he received when he plunged 1,000 feet from & balloon after a para- chute failed to open, Jes'e F. Har- rell, 56, printer, died here yesterday. Sixty bones were broken in his fall from the balloon at Peru, Ind., in 1895, Physicians gave him six hours to live, but Harrell insisted he would survive.
