WATERLOO, Towa, December 11 (%) —C. D. Morris of Chicago, member of | the Western Railways Committee on Public Relaticns, said in an address prcrared for delivery today that Western railroads reduced their expenditures for maintenance $75,000.000 during the first | nine months of 1930, in comparison with the same period of 1929. before the Lions Club. “Most of this reduction in expendi- He spoke | tures is but a postponement of main- | tenance work and not a permament economy,” he said. “The work must be done eventually and postponement of it is likely to make it cost more than he secluded him- | self behind lock- ed doors after the concert, and refused to see a greedy collection of admirers who had assembled to con- gratulate him. Fortunately, however, except for A minor pause or two during the coughing sequences, these worries did not detract an iota from Mr. Tturbi’s playing. A fame that has swept before him and taken the best that music critics have had to offer in the way of agjectives throughout the world seemed secure on his shoulders yesterday. His pMying, according to some of the veteran music lovers present, “reminiscent of Paderewski when he was 30," was an amazing display not only of technique but of emotion. Those who complained of “coldness” in his work must have derived their com- plaint from the fact that Iturbi bowed, after his numbers, with a face of iron. He seemed not to want to dispel the gloom that had overtaken him. by whimsicalities of facial expression. His actual accomplishments at yesterday's concert were such as must have electrified the most cyni cal. Not merely a matter of cor- rectness, he showed off “fireworks” and pianis thunderbolts that seemed undiminished during the en- tire program. Choosing, in fact, selections that showed his amazing virility in every manner and method of expression, Mr. Iturbi not only romped with sensational agility up and down the keys, but he got highlights and shadows and the very minutest variations of tone to per- fection such as seldom has been heard before.
