Bower- man is to be hung in the District or Columbia Public Library, where, as m librarian, he has worked in the interest ©f culture for 26 years. The painting, representing Dr. Bow- erman seated at his desk, is the recent work of Richard S. Meryman, eminent American portrait painter of Washing-' ton. The canvas was completed barely in time to submit it for exhibition in the current biennial show at the Cor- coran Gallery of Art, where it is on view until January. It is reproduced in the rotogravure section of The Star today. o Gift of Mrs. Bowerman. | The portrait of the librarian is the 't of Mrs. Bowerman to the library. | t was accepted recently by the board | of trustees of the library, and following | its showing at Corcoran it will be placed in some room or hall at the main_library building, Eighth stfeet and Mount Vernon place, where the public may view it at will. The « permanent location of the canves not vet ‘been determined, but ‘* be selected with a view of providing lhe most favorable light. . Mr. Meryman, who is well known as an artist in_this country and abroad, painted Dr. Bowerman's portrait in his Washington studio this Fall. More than 20 sittings were given by the li- brarian and the work, begun early in October, was completed in rapid order % ' by last month. The painting is typical 4 of Mr. Meryman's work, possessing as it i does, the exactness of the academic artist'’s work. 4 _In the canvas, which presents Dr.| Bowerman as a life size figure, the |1brerian is seated at his office desk. .3 /He has turned away from his work . glightly, as if to address a visitor. The | % !Aght hand, which has slipped to the | .1 " desk slide, still holds the pen with i which Dr. Bowerman apparently was recently at work. The canvas embraces | an area of desk, strewn with books and | papers of the subject’s profession and‘ & section of filled bookcases is in the background. Dr. Bowerman, himself, is | shown in three-quarter length, the bot- ! tom edge of the canvass cuiting just below the arm of the office chair, Second Meryman Work. ‘The Bowerman portrait is the second Meryman work to have place in the library. A portrait of Theodore W. Noyes, president of the library board of trustees and editor of The Star, has been hanging in the main library hall since 1922. The two portraits are not unsimilar in style and general char- acter. Mr. Meryman is principal of the Corcoran School of Art here. He also has taught at the Pennsylvania Acad- emy of the Fine Arts and in other in- ternationally known institutions of art instruction. mm&rmmwm INDRA Pearl* Necklaces and Choker in a great variety of shapes and styles.
