R., was enter- tained at the Women's City Club, Jack- son place, Washington, D. C., yesterday, by Mrs. Iscac M. Capayas end Miss Hodnett of Atlanta, Ga., and Washing- ton. Luncheon was served at 1:00 o'clock, after which the monthly busi- ness meeting was presided over by Mrs. Franklin_Williams of Vienna, chapter - regent. Devotional ex>reises were con- ducted by Mrs. Quincy A. Gates and patriotic exercises led by Mrs. Durward Smith, with Mrs. W. W. Snyder of Clarendon at the piano. A letter of ap- preciation was read from Dr. J. H. C.| Chandler for th> increase in the student loan scholarship fund at William and | Mary College, known as the William | and Jane Kurtz Smoot Memorial BScholarship. A report from the State Teachers' | College at Harrisonburg, Va., in regard | to the Caroline Sherman Student Loan | Scholarship Fund, established some | years ago by Fairfax County chapter, | stated that there was now & fund of | $1,127 and that 50 students had been helped through this fund to secure an education. Mrs. D. M. Zirkle moved that the organization go on record as favoring the non-recognization of Soviet Russia, | restricted immigration, and greater ef- | fort toward keeping communists out of the United States. Mrs. Zirkle was re- quested to present her motion in the . form of resolutions and Mrs. Harry Blake and Mrs. Richard Pierce wers appointed & committee to assist in drafting these resolutions to be ‘acted on at the next chapter meeting An appropriation of $5 was made to- ward the interior decoration of Ken- more, home of Betty Washington Lewis at Fredericksburg, Va. The program in charge of Mrs. Harry Keyser of Falls Church was postponed until the next | meeting. A letter from Mrs. Herbert Hoover’s secretary in regard to mission work in the Blue Ridge Mountains stressed the value of what had been done to call attention to the fact that | the Blue Ridge in Virgihia was 248 | miles in length and 33 miles wide and that there was still much work to be! done. Mrs. William C. Welburn of . Ballston reported having sent another | large box of knitting wools to Ellis Island for the use of immigrants de- tained there. The pro- ceeds will be used by Mrs. R. Ernest | . Smith, the club’s welfare chairman, in | relieving distress among the poor of the } community. Baskets will be distributed | among the unfortunates before Christ- mas eve. The club wishes to thank every one who helped make its Thanksgiving day festivities successful.
