December 6.—The | native talent of the Southern Negro for dramatics and music that found ex- pression in a grand opera of religion, “Heaven Bound,” is to be devoted to| charnty. The Bethlehem Baptist Church and 14 other Negro Baptist Churches of | Atlanta are uniting in presentation of | this original contribution to the world | of music at three performances Mon- | next week. Proceeds will go to the Christmas charitable enterprises of the E<!ance that adds to the fervor of the| 18_churches. Written, produced and directed en- tirely by Negro talent, the play has been | described by those who have viewed it | as a modern “Pilgrim’s Progress,” which affords full play to their imagery, reli- | glous fervor and rich talents for mimicry. Music lovers have pointed out that “Heaven Bound” is not an opera or a pageant. Rather, they say, it is a sort | of glorified Negro spiritual, blended with ' many of the qualities of the opera and the pageant. “Heaven Bound” portrays gles ot poor, sinful mortals striving to enter the golden gate of the promised land. But there is many a tempta- tion and many an obstacle to be over- come, with many a pilgrim falling by the wayside and being led along another path, “hell bound.” One of the most popular character hits of the play is a red, grinning devil, who never speaks a word throughout the two-hour-and-a-half presentation, but whose clever pantomime neverthe- less provokes in the audience sympathy for his victims. But there is exultation when one of the pilgrims thrusts the devilish one aside and, reaching the sacred receives his crown in triumph. ‘The production reaches its grand finale in the singing by the chorus of 150 voices of “All Hail, Emanuel.” Here the spell of the swinging, lilting rhythm often produces an emotional climax in an old-fashioned “shouting,” a circum- | chorus. Usually the demand of the audience for an encore, not unlike the curtain call of the conventional stage, results in the chorus rendering that favorite, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot.” ‘War Book Flood Still—On. Predictions made last Spring that the stream of books written about the World War had reached high-water mark and was likely to abate have not been realized in Europe. COKE OVEN POLLUTION REMOVED FROM RIVER By the Associated Press. CINCINNATI, Ohlo, December 6.— Pollution by by»vroduct coke ovenl “taste lige & gas works” has in most places been eliminated on_the Ohio River and its tributaries in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Ken- tucky and West Virginia, board of health commissioners from 11 States in or near the Ohio Rfver basin were told yesterday. F. D. Stewart of Columbus, assistant engineer of the Ohio Health Depart- ment, said also that all health com- missioners in the Ohio Valley States have agreed to rid their water supplies of coke oven tastes, which are largely caused by phenol and related substances. Twenty-five plants to eliminate this pollution have recently been completed, Other speakers told of research work being done by Btate health departments for methods of ridding water of phenol, typhoid fever bacteria and sewage.
