NEW YORK, November 29.—A move- ment toward lower interest rates on bank deposits, which has been gro for some weeks, ed momentum to- day after the announcement of the New ‘Iork Federal Reserve Bank that the Treasury Department will pay 1% per cent to depositaries of Treasury funds after next Monday. The current rate is 2 per cent. Banks have been receiving deposits of Government funds in connection with their subscriptions to Treasury issues. The profit on the deposit has frequently been sufficient to permit in- stitutions to pay high rates for Gov- ernment paper. The same practice exists in such States as New York and New Jersey, where successful bidders on State bonds receive State funds on which they usually pay 2 per cent. In periods of high money or active and strong securities markets they are able to show & substantial “spread” to cover premiums paid for these bonds. It is expected that the New York Clearing House Association will shortly take action on the question of interest mymen'a Iry the members of this body their depositors. Rates have al- rendy been reduced twice this year, first at the end of March and then on 15th June 26. The second cut was to the prevailing rate of 14 per cent. Savings bank institutions are also actively discussing the questions of re- ducing their deposit rates after the first of January. On October 1 a con- siderable proportion of the mutual sav- ings banks in Greater New York low- ered their rate from 41 per cent to “ 4 per cent. It is believed an announce- ment will be made some time in De- cember of a similar move on the part of the remaining institutions that are now paying 44 per cent. NEW TREATISE ON BONDS. A new ready reference book, designed to ald municipal bond buyers through- out the country, has been prepared for distribution by the Chemical Securities Corporation, affiliate of the Chemical Bank & Trust Co. The new guide, printed in pamphlet form, covers in detail the standards applicable to all municipal bonds and the requirements incident to their legality in New York, Massachusetts and Connecticut; the re- quirements for postal savings deposi- tories and those set up by the larger insurance companies.
