Admiral Pettengill, who has been in command of the submarine division of the battle fleet, s a native of Boise, |1 Idaho, where he was born October 25, 1877. He served in Washington in the Bureau of Ordnance from 1913 to 1916 when he reported for duty aboard the battleship Wycming for his World War service as executive officer of that ship. He was awarded the Navy Cross. Following his eommand of the_ de- stroyer squadrons of the Asiatic Fleet he came to Washington again in June, 1923, and served in the Bureau of Navi- gation. From December, 1924, to Octo- ber, 1927, he served as naval attache of the American Legation, Peking, China.
