[N GONTEMPT CASE Washington Attorney Suc- ceeds in Evading 75-Day Jail Term at Baltimore. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, October 23.—Norman 8. Bowles, Washington attorney, won his appeal from a 75-day sentence to jail on a contempt charge by an opin- ion handed down yesterday by United States Circuit Court of Appeals. The jail sentence had been im Judge William C. Coleman in District Court here last December. The opinion reversing Judge - Cole- man’s decision was the first handed down since the appeals court has been sitting here this week and was given by Judge John J. Parker and Judge W. H. Watkins, Judge Elliott Northeott dissented. The charges against Bowles grew out of an investigation by Judge Coleman following the lawyer's defense of a client who had violated the prohibition act. An investigation was ordered by the judge into the lawyer's record and it was found that he had been disbarred by the United States Supreme Court and sentenced to serve two years in the Federal Penitentiary in 1921. Bowles was alleged to have failed to appear before Judge Coleman for a hearing in November of last year and a bench warrant was issued for him on contempt charges. He was arrested on a visit to Maryland and brought be- fore Judge Coleman. It was at his hearing that the sen- tence was imposed on Bowles on charges of disobeying an order directing him to appear before the court at a hn.rln( concerning his conduct. He seeing the charges against him, nnd in the opinion handed down it was stated that there was nothing in the record to show that Bowles had seen & copy o! the charges.
