THE SUNDAY STAR, WASH].’NGTON, D. C, OCTOBER 12, 1930—PART THREE. Croup of Debutantes Aid in Presentation of “East Room Pageant” Historic Spectacle Depicting Scenes and Representing Events of Yesteryear Scheduled for October 24. The lovely old strains of “Listen to the Mocking Bird,” dedicated to Har- riet Lane and played by the Ma- rine Band on the White House lawn | during President Buchanan’s adminis- | tration, will be played by the Myer | Davis Orchestra as the musical back- | ground for the scene of the Buchanan | reception to the Prince of Wales in October, 1860, when the historic spec- tacle of “The East Room" is presented at the Willard in the ball room, by the ladies of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in the presence of distinguished officials and social leaders in the Capi- tal City on Friday evening, October 24. A group of Washington debutantes will take part in the always charming old-fashioned waltz, dancing to the popular music of that day, “The Beauti- ful Blue Danube,” and wearing the wide hoop skirts of the period. Miss Louise Hoehling will be the President’s niece, Harriet Lane, in this episode of the pageant, and the “guests” of the oc- casion will include Miss Margaret Bn«.‘ Miss Elizabeth Brawner, Miss Mary | Henry, Miss Elizabeth Jobe, Miss Mary | Elizabeth McArthur, Miss Mary Ruden, Miss Mary Shinn, and well as Mrs. Charles Bateson, Mrs. Hugh J. Davis, Mrs. Frank Hill and others. Many of the costumes will be “orig- inals” and all of them will be au- thentic, the girls having ransacked old | trunks and delved into attics to find | the proper raiment for the characters | they will portray on this occasion. A particularly joyous function, that of the children’s party given by Mrs. | Tyler, the first wife of President Tyler, | for her tiny grandchild, in July, 1841, | will form the basis for one of the color- | ful episodes, with Miss Dorothy Yaeger | appearing as the First Lady of this| occasion, assisted by Miss Lilla La | Garde, Miss Phoebe Fuller, Mrs. Robert | Grove and a group of charming chil- | dren, including Mrs. Woodrow Wilson's <mall niece, Barbara Bolling; Anne | Clarke, Patricia_ Morris, Wilma_ Nichol- | son, Medora Shores, Peggy Thornton and Margaret Townsend, all of them wearing cunning pantelettes and the short wide skirts of the day. In this scene Miss Yaeger will wear her grandmother's silk grenadine, and all the tostumes will be “original” cre- ations of that period, handed down to <heir present-day wearers. The big task of costuming correctly the many scenes and periods in this historic spectacle, is in the hands of Mrs. Owen Albright, and the equally important work of properly staging the scenes, with all authentic properties and accescorigs, is being directed by Mrs. Willoughby Chesley, with Prof. Crandall | of George Washington University giving his personal supervision to the actual designing of the “east room” in all its stages of completion and its many changes. An original musical setting for the continuity of the story been just completed by Mr. Percy Van Ness, in co-operation with Mrs. Joseph Wall, chairman of the music, not only for the pageant itself, but for the danc- ing that will follow. Mrs. Wayne Wirg- man, author of the pageant, has charge | of the assembling of the large personnel | and the direction of the early rehearsals of the scenes. Antique Tea Scheduled By M. E.
