How long Reddy Fox would have re- mained trying to get Nanny Meadow Mouse out of that tin can in which she had found shelter, had not Farmer Brown's Boy suddenly appeared once more, no one knows. Reddy was so in- “tent on what he was doing that he had forgotten all about Farmer Brown's Boy. It was the snapping of a twig that ‘warned him that some one was coming. One hasty glance and Reddy was on his way. Reddy can run very swiftly when he wants to, and now he wasted no_time. Fermer Brown's Boy caught a glimpse PFARMER BROWN'S BOY REACHED UP AS HIG HAS HE COULD AND WEDGED THE CAN IN BETWEEN TWO BRANCHES. of Reddy as he raced away. He didn’t see where Reddy had come from, and he hardly gave him a thought. Pres- ently. he came to that tin oil can that he had thrown in the bushes. A bit of grass was sticking out of the round | hole which Nanny Meadow Mouse used as a doorway. Farmer Brown's Boy no- ticed thlmthn ln:;ve him an idea. BURGESS here, the old can would be of some use after all.” So Farmer Brown’s Boy once more picked -up the old can. He peeped within, but all he could see was & lit- tle grass. He couldn’t see Nanny Mea- dow Mouse. Close at hand was a young cherry tree. Farmer Brown’s Boy then reached up as high as he could and wedged the can between two branches. Then he fished a piece of string from his pocket and securely lashed can in place. The round opening, which was Nanny's doorway, was facing toward the south. “There!” said he. “I guess this will do. Herels hoping that some one will find this and decide that it will make a good home.” With this Farmer Brown’s Boy went whistl away across the Green Meadows towa his own home. ’ For a long time Nanny Meadow Mouse remained still. So many things had happened that day that Nanny had quite lost heart. No sooner did every- thing seem to be all ht she discovered that it was wrong. So she remained quiet for a long time. She wasn’t at all sure that Reddy Fox was not waiting to jump on her the instant she poked her head out of that little round doorway. By and_by Nanny noticed a little motion. ~Somehow her house didn’t She began to won- der what that meant. It rocked ever so little. Finally she got courage enough to go close to the little door- way so that she could look out. She didn't venture to put her nose out, but just stood looking out. “This is queer,” thought Nanny. “All 1 can see are green leaves and the sky. I ought to see grass, but I don’t. How can I be seeing leave:;?” She sat a while and thought this over. Thinking it over didn't help a bit. ‘The more she thought the more puzzled she became. Finally she de- cided that she would put just her head out. She did. She put her head out and took one good look around and then almost fell over backward. She was up in the air! She really was! You know Nanny is & very small 'ge;:on, and when she looked down ground looked a frightfully long distance away. At first she didn’t quite realize what it all meant, but after venturing to look out again she understood that she was up in a tree. Once she had had her home in an old nest in a bush, 50 she understood just what it meant, though how she got there she didn't understand. Right away she made up her mind that she was going to get away from that old tin can as soon as ever she could. (Copyright, 1930.) TARZAN AND THE JEWELS OF OPAR Werper bent his head in thought. Achmet Zek stood walting his reply. What good remained in the Belgian revolted at the thought of selling a white woman into the slavery and degradation of a Mos- lem harem. Yet wh¥l should he refuse? This wom- an was nothing to him. He was an outcast with the hand of every white man against him. And if he refused to lend himself to her undoing, Achmet Zek would kill him. Love of life surged through Werper. He looked up and saw the scowling face of Achmet. He saw the Arab's eyes narrow and guessed Achmet sensed his antagonism to the plan. “You hesitate,” murmured the Arab. “I was but weighing the chance of suc- cess,” lied Werper, “and my reward. As a European I can gain admittance to their house and table. The risk is great. I should be well paid. The rewar is what matters.” 3 A smile of relief &uud over the “Well?” Werper asked.
