'B—-14 4)PER CENT FAVOR DRY LAW REPEAL Digest Poll Shows 30.46 Per cent for Modification of 18th Amendment. ©On the basis of final returns in the Literary Digest's Nation-wide prohibi- tion poll, the periodical will say tomor- row that 40 voters out of every 100 in the United States desire the repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. Out of 20,000,000 ballots sent out, 4,806,464 were returned to the maga- sine marked as follows: For enforcement, 1,464,098, or 30.46 r cent; for modification, 1,399,314, or | .11 per cept; for repeal, 1,943,052, or 40.43 per cent. Five States for Enforcement. Pive States gave a majority vote for strict enforcement, Arkansas, Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma and Ten- nessce. Five States gave a majority for rcpeal. Connecticut, Louisiana, Ne- vada, New Jersey and Rhode Island. ‘The final figures dlsclnse that the two extremes ran almost “neck and necl ing In opposite directions: Kansas, 761 per cent dry; Nevada, 57.61 per cent wet. ‘Thirteen States gave over 40 per cent of their votes for strict enforce- ment: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Jowa, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Ne- braska, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas. Eighteen States and the District of Columbia registered more than 40 per cent for repeal, as follows: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan. Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New ‘York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Wisconsin and Wyomng. ‘The final figures for the District of Columbia were: For strict enforcement, 4,477; for modification, 5,282; for re- peal, 7,972 Brought Harvest of Votes. ‘Washington State is the only one to rive even a slightly larger vote for ight wines and beer than for either enforcement or repeal, the magazine will say, adding that the States that cast approximately 30 per cent of their ballots for such modification include nearly one-half of the whole country. Commenting on the poll, the maga- zine says, the “harvest of votes far ex- ceeds the fruits of all The Digest’s most famous and disputed presidential polls. Election of officers and announce- ment of two vacancies in its home for aged women, at 2403 Pennsylvania avenue, featured the annual board meeting of the Southern Relief Society, held in the home today. Mrs. Theo- dore Tiller was re-elected president of the society. ~Other officers elected were: . Mrs. H. Wallace Witcover, first vice president; Mrs. James H. Thurston, second vice president; Mrs. Pearce Horne, recording secretary; Mrs. Alice n, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Drury C. Ludlow, treasurer, re-elected; ‘Mrs. Milton Johnson, parliamentarian; Mrs. Mary L. Barnes, chaplain, and Mrs. Nelson Webster, historian. ‘The Southern Relief Society aids Confederate veterans, their widows and dependents who have resided in the District for five years or more. The two vacancies at the home on Penn- sylvania avenue may be filled by any dependent widow “or daughter of a Confederate soldier who has resided in this city for a period of five years. Applications to fill the vacancies should be made to Miss Elizabeth Zea, 2108 G street, or' by writing the South- ern Relief Soclety at 2403 Pennsyl- Wania avenue, it is announced. Hatchatouroff, 37, sent to this country to study oil refining methods, com- mitted suicide here Wednesday. A translation of two notes left by Hatchatouroff revealed that he hated the Soviet government for which he worked as an industrial research stu- dent, and preferred death as an exile in America to a return to Russia while the present government is in power.
