PFLORENCE, Italy, May 23.—Flowers were piled high today at the foot of the | Neptune Monument in the Signoria Square in memory of the famous revolu- tionary monk Savonarola. At the base of the monument is a little tablet re- cording the fact that. May' 23, 1498, Savonarola was hanged and his body burned on that spot. : The newspapers did not print remind- ers of the rebel monk's anniversary, but the fact scemed, as in other years, to have lingered in memory. People came from many quarters and deposited their floral offerings at the Savonarola tablet. Many Americans were among them. Savonarola had two great loves—the Christian religion and the Republic of Florence.. He proclaimed Christ King of Florence and placed himself.in opposi- tion to the ruling Medici family. & time, with the aid of King Charles VIII of France, Savonarola’s Tule, based on the law of Christ, prevailed in Flar- ence. But Savonarola went too far and the people of Florence turncd against him. In some quarters he is regarded as a forerunner of the reformation. PLANS ARE MADE TO CONSTRUCT LARGEST SEAPLANE IN WORLD| Craft With 289 Feet Wing Spread Will Be Able to Carry | 120 Passengers and 42,000 Pounds. By the Assoclated Press. DAYTON, Ohio, May 23.—Plans for the largest seaplane in the world, which would be used for transoceanic service exclusively, were detailed by H. V. Tha- den, vice president of ‘the Pittsburgh Metal Airplane. Co., at the. concluding | session of the fourth annual convention of the Society of Mechanical Engineers, Aeronautic Division, here yesterday. ‘The ship, which would carry a pay load of 42,000 pounds and be capable of carrying 120 passengers and express baggage, was described in a paper pre- | pared by Dr. E. Rumpler of the Rump- | ler Motor Works of Berlin, Germany, and read by Thaden. The plane is being designed in the Rumpler works and actual construction is expected to start within a year. The Rumpler plane will have a wing spread of 289 feet, length of 160 feet and wing cord of 41 feet. As is the case with the huge Dornier plane, recently put into service in Germany, all passen- gers will be seated in the single wing of the plane, which will be eight feet thick. | The place ordinarily used for cabin | space will be utilized for baggage and | M:Brocks.Co An Unusual Event in Our MAIN FLOOR BLOUSE SECTION .. @ SILK BLOUISES Up to Now $5.95 to $9.95 Priced for Saturday! express. ‘There will be two such pon- toon cabins on the Rumpler ship. Ten Diesel engines of the pusher type, each developing 500 horsepower, will be mounted in back of the wing. ‘The plane will have a cruising radius of 5000 miles and gasoline capacity of 12,000 gallons, although by using crude ofl for the Diesel engines it is expected this will be reduced materially. The plane is designed to have a maximum ;P‘e:d of 145 miles an hour with full oad. Six mechanics, four pilots and a com- manding officer would make up the crew. ‘With workers in the nitrate and cop- per fields of Chile finding jobs in the public works activities, the country's unemployment situation is now about normal. - M-Brooks.C REET BETWEE! 2 G Continuing Saturday . . .
