THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C. FRIDAY, MAY 9, 1930. For Mother’s Day-—; 5.2 G toe Choosing Your Career Shipping Holds Opportunity for Career Seekers Who Have High Qualities of Leadership, Love of Ad- venture, Courage, Determination, Ambition. BY JOSEPH E. SHEEDY This is the twentieth of a series of 24 articles designed to help youg men and women find careers which appeal to them fitted. Each art assachusetis Nautical 00l and be- an his career as an officer in the United ates Revenue Cutter Service. He was for several years in charge of operations for the United States Emergency Fleet Corporation. OU should have high qualities of leadership if you expect to make a career for yourself in the op- erating end of the shipping business. You have to be & leader of men to make your way at sea., Likewise, you should have a love of ad- venture and real courage. Frequent ;nl]ll are made on the latter particu- arly. Determination and ambition also are necessary in those of you who would take up the work of the merchant ma- rine, You will find great opportunities, but in order to make the most of them you have to stick to your job and keep an _eye open for the place just ahead. You will need nautical training to qualify for the executive posts on ship- board. You can get it at any of the excellent schools we have in this coun- try. They combine the practical with the theoretical in their courses of study. The average young man can get an ex- | cellent start through them. Ship own- ers almost always have places open for graduates. You can come up from the ranks of nole-bodied seamen,-so to speak, t if you take this course you will need #tudy considerably and to have a mind that grasps the elements of sea- manship quickly. Otherwise the nau- tical school men are likely to have the advantage, Aid in Mathematics. You'll find that a liking for mathe- matics will help you in a nautical school and that ability as a linguist will be of great aid to you in the merchant ma- rine. A vigorous personality and a ro- bust body also will assist you in mak- headway. ou can leave a qualified school and start in as a subordinate on shipboard at an average of $70 a month. This is » fair wage, when you consider that you have practically no living expenses while you are at sea. Promotion in position and salary will be rapid if you are qualified. Ship captains are assured an average income of from $4,200 to $9,000 & year. You will have o work hard, be will- ing to take responsibility and undergo many hardships to reach such a place. Make up your mind that the sea is an exacting taskmaster. Oftentimes hun- dreds of human lives and a fortune in property are in the hands of a captain of & ship. That means that you have to be tried and true before you can get a command of your own. But even if you are not gifted as a sailor, there are great opportunities to- day in the shipping industry—greater in fact than ever before in the history of our country. To gain an idea of them just visualize one ship. Think of the Leviathan, the world's largest ship and the flagship of the American merchant marine. ‘The Leviathan is a small city in itself, carrying, &s it can, almost 3,000 passengers and more than 1,000 in ‘the crew. Such a ship requires officers to navigate and chart its course, engi- neers, electricians, plumbers, tailors, ex- pert chefs, pursers and many other skilled and well paid workers. Back of passenger freight- carry- ing ships are the organizations. They, too, will furnish you opoprtunity. ¥ith peopie. to il passage 5 travelers wit! ple, to sell passage velers. You can be assured that within the next few years the expansion of Amer- jcan shipping will probably equal, if not surpass, that of any period of our history. This means that you can turn | to the sea under your own flag and cut out a fine career for yourself, Shipping is an exacting business and one, by its very nature, for experts and you who have the determination to become experts. You will not find fame and high salaries over night in shipping, but the opportunities are there and more will come, with financial rewards equal to those in other large industries.
