A—16 TEPPELI ADDS NEW APPARATS Larger Horizontal Rudder Put on Ship for Next Ocean Flight. By the Associated Press. FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, May 9.—Al-| though the great dirigible Graf Zeppe- | lin has weathered many a storm and is | no longer a new vessel, it will take off | on its first flight to South America May | 18 more perfectly equipped than it has | ever been before. Not only did the officers and crew gain invaluable experience in navigating and running the airship during the round-the-world flight in 1929, but this experfence has resulted in a number of improvements. Rudder Improved. Thus the horizontal rudder has been enlarged considerably and reinforced. This means_that the dirigible can rise or drop much more easily than hitherto. Up to now, if the officers wished to drop from 1,500 meters to 300 meters or rise similarly, they had to sacrifice consid- erable gas or ballast and the maneuver required time. The test flights of this year have shown that changes in alti- tude can be easily and quickly accom- plished with the new rudder at the loss ©of almost no ballast or gas. # will be recalled that the Graf nearly ran into a mountain during its illfated attempt in May, 1929, to fly to America, when the engines went wrong and the dirigible struggled through the Rhone Valley, vainly trying to get back to Germany and having finally to land at Cuers, France It was only Eckener's gresence of mind in instantly dropping allast that saved the passengers from certain death. This experience, at the narration of which all participants in that flight still shudder, probably was the deciding factor in changing the Tudder. New Dynamo Added. Another decided improvement is the attachment of a second gondola besides that for the passengers, this gondola serving as the central &tation for ali electrical apparatus. The new gondola contains two auxiliary motors and a dynamo, and supplies the current need- ed for lighting, cooking and other pur- poses. Hitherto all electric current came from generators which depended for their yield upon the speed of the airship. When the dirigible traveled slowly the current was insufficient. The world flight has further shown just what parts of the upper hull are subjected to special strain. At these points the material has been reinforced and the five motors have, of course, been overhauled. BUCHANAN MEMORIAL TO BE UNVEILED SOON President Hoover and Gov. Fisher Are Invited to Take Part in Ceremonies. ‘The memorial erected to President James Buchanan in Meridian Hill Park will be unveiled shortly and invitations have been sent to President Hoover and Gov. John S. Fisher of Pennsyl- vania to participate in the ceremonies. After word has been received from them a definite date will be set for the unveiling. Lieut. Col. U. S. Grant, 3d, director of public buildings and public parks, is assisting in making the arrange- ments, but invitations have been issued by Gen. Lawrason Riggs of Baitimore, executive for the estate of Harriet Lane Johnston, niece of President Buchanan and mistress of the White House during his term of office. ‘The memorial shows President Bu- chanan seated, with statutes symbolizing law and diplomacy on either hand. Itis Jocated in the east end of the park, which is being designed as one of the most beautiful in the city. While President Hoover and Gov. Ficher are Republicans, President Bu- chanan, who served as Chief Executive while the Civil War was brewing, was & Democrat. He came from Pennsyl- vania, and hence the chief executive of the Keystone State is being asked to participate in the unveiling ceremonies. $25 FINE IS ASSESSED FOR BASS FISHING HERE Angler Punished on Charge of 1207 F 7th & K 3212 14th “Man’s Shop”—14th at G THE greatest shoe event on each year’s calendar comes to a head tomorrow.
