HOLLYWOOD, April 22 (N.AN.A.).— ‘The movie child is still the most inter- esting phenomenon of Hollywood, and Jackie Coogan is still the outstanding example of the movie child. But even movie kiddies grow up, and grow out of the fat roles which have brought their parents such luxuries as sable cloaks and foreign-built motors. At an Easter-egg hunt on the lawns of a fashionable California resort on Easter Sunday morning behold, then, Jackie Coogan, attired as befits a lad- die several years his junior, leading the kiddies in their search for eggs. Jackie had his younger brother by the and. Younger brother is a handsome little fellow, with blond, curly hair and great dark eyes. Jackie was enthusing quite in the manner of juniors over the fascinating phases of the hunt. . Said a bystander: “Isn't Jackie Coo- gan much too old for this sort of "h‘n'd?" f the ising And one of the genties supervi the show replied: “Well, y-e-s, but his parents are so anxious to keep him in the little-boy class. You see, it's im- genam from a business standpoint. So e joins right in with the other kids and really has a good time of it." So in the final analysis Hollywood is made up of two classes of people— Ladies who cannot grow old and who must not grow fat; And little kiddies who cannot grow up. ‘The Jim Cruzes and their parties have made many items of interest in Hollywood annals. A second separation and the rustling of divorce papers do not mean finality, in the opinion of their many friends. Many friends, or those who call them- selves friends, have been the thorn in their marital life. Cruze long ago es- tablished the custom of having a bowl full of change in the house. The im- pecunious help themselves to a few bits of silver to carry them over hard places. ‘The lucky at cards or the games of chance contribute to the bowl. Try and keep your guest list down if your cellar is good and there is a bowl of loose change there for the taking. ‘The vicissitudes of Lupe Velez bring us up short with a problem to consider. Just what is & Hollywood success? Nobody who ed across the movie sky had such a “break” as Lupe. And that word is synonymous for every- thing that is good in Hollywood. “break” is the very catholic tag used to label anything and everything con- nected with fortune. Jose] Schenck, high mogul of moviedom, told the world that here was the outstanding Latin type of the earth. Guadalupe Villabolos, straight out of Mexico and not so long from & hut with mud floors, was the comet of the Holly- b'ood sky two weeks before talkies Toke. She it was who queened it at dances exclusive to the professional group in white evening gowns that took your breath away, great diamond earring dangling almost to her slim little shoulders. It was Lupe at this telling who caught the roving eye of the then-unmarried Al Jolson. It was Lupe who told him off when he kept her waiting for an hour one evening when he had asked her out to ‘g‘u:c;,eu Lupe ':mt back lh: ;x- qui t-poin! olson seént her to replace one she had lost a previous evening when out with him. “Nobody keeps Lupe waiting,” she had told him on that occasion. Irving Berlin heard Lupe singing and acclaimed her a find. She wrote a story, and the Schenck forces assured one with the most sangfroid that here was a genius; her picture would be luced. ‘Then she made & le. D. W. Grif- fith directed her. But he couldn’t save the picture. About this time she fell in love with Gary Cooper. Was she the type that cannot withstand ro- mance? Won't her public accept her l\nt;uroleol.mlmmnuum\n love Her contract with the Schenck-forces was not renewed. 's beginning a new contract under new and fresh aus- pices. The old Lupe will be revived— the glamorous, glowing Mexican rose of pre-talkie days. (Copyright. 1930.) A [ 4 8UD Fisusr One Teacher + One Pupil F =Twe Teachers.
