FINANCIAL NEW YORK STOCK EXCHANGE PROGRESS REPORTS " HEARD BY BANKERS Earlier Closing Hours Also Considered at Meeting of D. C. Association. BY EDWARD C. STONI Repbrts from chairmen of many of the District Bankers' Association stand- ing committees and the question of 2 o'clock closing made up the chief busi- mess taken up at a special meeting yesterday afternoon at headquarters. ‘The reports contained much that will be embodied in the annual reports, to be presented at the coming convention at Asheville. Among the chairman presenting re- ports were Eliot. H. Thomson, adver- tising; George O. Vass, commercial trade activities: Edward J. McQuade, protective committee; Luther E. Schrein- er, publf¢ity; F. P. H. Siddons, insur- ance; Frederick H. Cox, standard banking forms; Lanier P. McLachlen, Treasury relations; Francis G. Addi- son, law and legislation: H. G. Hoskin- son, credit bureau; Raymond Marx, auditors’ section, and Charles E. Howe, safe deposit_section. The president named a committee to draw ‘up tentative plans covering the earlier closing proposal, which will be presented to the different bank boards- for approval. The fate of the shorter hours plan hinges on the action taken by the member bank individual boards. ‘In some quarters there is much enthusiasm over the proposal. Other :’lnkem are only lukewarm over the lea. The association passed resolutions to the memory of the late Francis W. Stone, vice presicent of the National Saving & Trust Co. President W. J. Waller was in the chair and the meet- ing was the fMrgest Spring session ©f the kind ever. held. C. & O. Earns $4.46 Per Share. The Chesapeake & Ohio Railway Co. for March reporfs gross revenues of $0,216,005, compared with $10,311.909 in’ the corresponding month of last year. The net operating income of the ‘company in March amounted to $2,030.- 206, against $2,639.827 in the 1929 month. Por the first three months of the current year gross revenues were $20,712,152, compared with $31,332,793 in the same quarter of last year. Net operating income in the period was $7,892,066. against $8,596,323 in the corresponding three months of the pre- vious year. In the first quarter of the current year the company earned $4.46 & share on 1483213 shares of common stock, compared with $5.06 a share on 1,180,- 940 shares in the corresponding perind of 1929. The net income of the com- pany in March was $1,621484, and $6,618.251 in -the first three months, against $2,062.902 and $6819,046, re- apectively, in the 1929 periods. Income Tax Returns Slump. Individual income taxes dropped off $38.985,994 of the total of $40.242,771 reduction in all income tax collections | in March of this year, as compared with March, 1929, according to figures made Eubllc by Bureau of Internal Revenue. orporation income taxes dropped only $1.256,777. Treasury officlals looked for a larger reduction in collections because of the cut of 1 per cent in all income taxes paid on incomes earned in 1929. As has been predicted. corporation returns held up well in spite of the lower tax, due to_prosperous business last year. Total of income tax collections for March were $555,744.639 against $595.- 987,410 in March, 1929. Of these col- Jections $280,831418 consisted of cor- poration taxes, $1,256,777 less than cor- responding month a year ago, and $274,- 913220 consisted of individual taxes against $313.899,214 for March, 1929. Local Business Coming Back. ‘The recent improvement in the New | York Stock Market should have an im- portant effect in lifting business in Washington. This assertion was made today by a local bank president who is not doing | much cheering over the business condi- tions which have prevailed so far in 1930, but who looks for better things as the year advances. ‘The break in the stock market had a tremendous effect on business in every city and town in the country, although the steady Government pay roll pre- vented the Natiohal Capital from being hit as hard as many industrial cities | ‘were, the bank official said. | Based on the fact that the market erash hurt business so severely, the same reasoning should now be employed to back up the claim that a stronger | stock market will help business. For | that reason, the present advance in| Wall Street, although quite irregular, is | sure to be reflected sooner or later in 81l parts of the country, this city included. Trading Quiet on Exchange. Six 10-share sales in Mergenthaler Linotype led trading on the Washing- ton Stock Exchange today. The stock opened at 1071; and closed at 107%. National Union Fire Insurance sold 25, 100 shares of Real Estate Mort- gage & Guaranty preferred at 7. Poto- mac Electric Power 5% per cent pre- ferred at 108!, and Peoples Drug Btores preferred at 10815. Bonds were in quite good demand at recent levels. ‘The Washington Bond Club was ad- later High. Burruss of | New York and Washington on “Shake- | speare, the Salesman.” He is a sales- | manship engineer and his talk was much enjoyed. | Norfolk & Southern Report. | ‘The annual report for 1929 of the | Worfolk Southern Railroad Co. shows | total assets of $44,364,740, against $44.- | 899.500 at the end of the previous year. | Current assets were $1,680,016, com- red with $2,110,518 at the close of 928. Current liabilities were $652,997, | against $1,099,462. The profit and loss | surplus at the end of 1920 amounted | to $6,860.380, compared with $6,776,225 at the close of 1928. Heard in Financial District. President George L. Starkey of the | National Bank of Washington is pass- mf two weeks in Atlantic City. He will return to the bank next Saturday George A. Garrett, resident partner of F. B. Keech & Co,, is spending & few days in Chicago. He will return Thursday. Thomas J. Mangan, jr., manager of the Washington office of Hemphill, Noyes & Co., has joined his family at the Greenbrier Hotel, White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., for a Spring vacation. Cyril J. Jones has been made mai ger of the sales force in the Washing- ion office of Henry L. Doherty & Co., Southern Building. He succeeds Albert D. O’'Connor, who has been promoted to manager of the Baltimore office. An increase of $308,391, or 17.33 per cent, in the railway operating revenues of the Richmond, Fredericksburg & Po- tomac Railroad 'Co. for 1929 was re- rted at the annual stockholders’ meet- g_vesterday at Richmond The directors of the National Sav ngs & Trust Co. at their monthly me ing yestérday passed resolutions of re- spect to the memory of Francis W. Money Rate Lowered. BY STANLEY W. PRENOSIL, © Associated Press Financial Editor. NEW YORK, April 22.—The stock market experienced another storm of selling this morning, in which scores of issues were carried down 1 to 10 points, but a brisk rally developed in the early afternoon under the leader- ship of a selected list of amusements, farm implements, rails and specialties. Many of the morning losses were cut down, and a long list of issues marked up 1 to 5 points, with a sprinkling of ethers selling 6 to 18’4 points higher. Early selling, which received consid- erable impetus from the further decline in wheat prices and the publication of some disappointing first quarter reports, was widely characterized as a further correction of the topheavy speculative position built up in the last six weeks. The subsequent rally was influenced, in part; by the lowering of call money and bankers' acceptance rates and the appearance of strong buying support for some of the industrial jeaders. 4 Business news continued mixed. OChi- cago steel operations were reported to have shown a substantial decline, but the output in other centers is being maintained at good levels. Foreign buying of copper continues in fair vol- ume, but domestic consumers are slow in placing forward business at the cur- rent 14 cents a pound level. Practically all of the leading copper stocks broke to new low levels for the year, Federal Mining & Smelting dropping 10 points, while the decl::u lnm",:e others ran from fractions to 3 pof . Rails were mixed. Reading broke nearly 5 points to a new low for the year at 1157, and Chesapeake & Ohio dropped 3, while Illinois Central was marked up 6% points to a new high at 134 and Union Pacific advanced 3%, nts. po;n the !fll{ selling Brooklyn Union Gas, Ingersoli Rand, United Afrcraft, ‘Westinghouse Electric and American Tobacco B dropped 4 to 414 points, while American Telephone, Allied Chemical, Western Union, Columbian Carbon and American Can were among the many issues to sag 3 points or more. J. 1. Case was again a spectacular feature, soaring 18V, points to & new high at 342, which’ contrasts with the year's low of 192%;. Worthington Pump jumped 11'% points to 148'z and Va- nadium Steel 6% to 1423, both new Eastman Kodak rallied 6 points, A. M. Byers 5 and McKeesport Tin Plate 3% to a new high at 84. Radio was bought in heavy volume, crossing 66 to a new high level for the year. CHICAAG—O DAIRY MARKET. CHICAGO, April 32 (#)—Butter— Weak; 14,546 tubs.
