Although rumors ran through the city fate last night’that Lee had surrendered Yesterday—Supday—it was not until the Ppeople heard ‘the official salute of 500 guns this morning that they were cer- tain the news was authentic. The Government departments were all promptly closed early in the forenoon, and the streams of clerks issuing from the buildings helped to swell the throngs on the streets.
