OCEAN SPEEDWAY, DAY‘I'ONA BEACH, Fla., April 10.—Kaye Don, Brit- ish automobile racer, brought his Silver Bullet machine to the Ocean Speedway here shortly before noon today for a series of test runs to determine if conditions of the beach were satisfac- tory for his attempt to break the world’s straightaway speed record of 331 miles an hour. After trial runs, the motor began sputtering, so he announced the ma- chine would be returned to the garage ‘without an attempt at the record. Weather conditions were ideal and thé beach appeared to be in better shape than at any time since Don ar- rived here nearly a month ago for his trials. Several ridges were noted Just north of the center of the 10- mile course, however, which t.ho dnver said might shake him about th speed, but he did not believe they ‘would be_dangerous. Shonly after bringing his car to the beach at the north end, 6 miles from the grandstand and timing tower, Don made a last-minute inspection of the car and then drove over the course in . vuuniet machine to look over the Prompt.ly at 11:30 am., Don climbed into the cockpit of the ginnt machine and 3 minutes later began his first test Tun over the course. As the powerful car flashed by the grandstand, it appeared to be function- ing perfectly. It held its course good, although just south of the end of the «~Mcial mile it struck several ridges, causing it to bounce somewhat, but the driver kept it™ under perfect control. ‘The trial officially was timed at 182.741 miles an_hour. Over the 1 kilometer, his speed was 182.755. Upon reaching the south end of the course, mechanics quickly changed tires again and made an inspection of the motors and rear end. Don only recently lowered the gear ratio in order to in- crease his speed and his first run was for the purpose of giving the machine & thorough test. Don began his second run of the day at 12:10, but as the machine passed the grandstand, the motors lppelred to backfire and slow down, but imme- diately afterward “gieked up lmed again and the car roa on down the course. The third trial resulted in additional motor trouble. MISSISSIPPI OFFICER FACES IMPEACHMENT By the Associated Press. JACKSON, Miss, April 10.—Main- taining that Lester C. Franklin, chair- than of the State Tax Commission, “is a faithless public officer and unfit to hoid office in this State,” a legislative investi- gaunz committee yesterday laid the \ foundation upon which his impeach- ment will be sought in the Hmue of Representatives today. PFranklin’s removal from office is based on the fllegnlon that he “tipped” ‘Warren Bros.’ Road Paving Co. of Bos- ton, Mass., off to a contemplated anti- trust suit in the name of the State, and in so doing in advance of the filing of the sult afforded the firm an oppor- tunity to withdraw all its assets from the State and become immune to prose- cution for alleged violation of the anti- trust statutes. Mix them together—a pinch of salt to a dash of sugar—and a flavor is created that has no equal. ‘This combination of sugar and salt is ideal for all kinds of cookery. ‘Vegetables such as tomatoes, carrots, cabbage, peas, spinach and corn take on new goodness when thus flavored. The familiar Prench dressing is also improved by this seasoning. In cooking chops, in making meat sauces or stews, the same holds true.
