By the Assoclated Press. ATLANTA, Ga., April 10.—A clue to premature old age found in the newest vitamin, G, was reported to the health section of the American Chemical So- ciety yesterday. Growing of heavier cotton that can compete with trees in supplying the world’s cellulose was forecast at a gen- eral session. Only about one year old in the recog- nized family of diet principles, vitamin G was introduced to the chemists as possessor of special controls over growth. These newly found qualities were described by Prof. H. C. Sherman of Columbia University, in whose chem- istry laboratory they are coming to light upon rat subjects. In these animals the vitamin is di- rectly connected with growth. Lack of it, said Dr. Sherman, may retard growth, stop it or, in extreme cases, cause death. In some rats the shortage caused pre- mature old age. Forecast of cotton’s future was made by Dr. H. E. Howe of Washington, edi- tor of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, who told how comes South.” “Present tendencies,” said Dr. Howe, “would indicate a time when cotton may be grown for weight rather than for length of fiber, to the point where it will compete successfully with cellu- lose from wood.” _“chemistry ORDERS CHANGE OFFICERS Lieut. MOSCOW, April 10.—To aid in attract- ing tourists to Russia and to gain money for purchase of machinery in pursuance of the five-year industrialization .plan, the Soviet government is being urged to put on public display the $264,000,000 collection of Russian crown jewels.
