B—10 GANDHI FOLLOWERS CONTINUE DEFIANCE Many Groups Make Salt From Sea Water in Civil Dis- obedience Campaign. By the Associated Press. BOMBAY, India, April 10.~Two hun- dred civil disobedience volunteers, in- cluding six Mohammedans and three ‘women, brought sea water to the steps of Congress House today for the manu- facture of salt in violation of British w. law. ‘The band divided itself into 20 groups, each bringing a supply of sea water from different parts of the city. Thirty- wo salt pans were installdd at Congress House for the manufacture of the con- traband. A large number of women figured in the salt making today, many of them, mostly from Gujerat, bringing the sea water to their homes where they vio- p7d the law. The violations of the salt law represent the first step in the campaign of civil disobedience by which Indian Nationalists hope to win inde- pendence for their country. ‘There were two arrests of volunteers in Bombay’s suburbs last night for sell- ing salt, one of them offering the for- bidden product to a magistrate at his Tesidence. Mahatma Gandhi, sexagenarian Na- tionalist leader, was unable to leave Jalalpur for Karadimatvad to break the #alt law there as he had intended, but the men and women at Karadimatvad and at Aat collected salt without his guidance. At Cuttack Orissa a prominent India National Congress leader, Gopal Bandu Chaudhury, was arrested today while marching toward the seashore heading & party of volunteers for the purpose of breaking the salt act. Students, greatly excited, left school anc began parading the streets and | picketing. Fourteen of them were ar- Tested also. GANDHI CAMPAIGN GROWS. London Fears Violence May Result From Salt Laws Violation. LONDON, April 10 (#).—The civil disobedience campaign of Mahatma Gandhi, Indian notionalist leader, is reported here to be growing rapidly in strength. Indian police are said to be finding 1t increasingly difficult to handle the sit- uation provoked with open violation of the salt laws, although the constabu- lary nowhere has been overpowered. One of the principal difficulties has arisen from Gandhi’s order to his | devotees to hold on to their contra- band salt at all costs, even if the bones of their hands are broken. This is just what has happened in some cases, and sauthorities fear violence may result if harsh measures are con- tinued.
