Radio's ripsnortin’ rough _ rider, *“Hello, World!” Henderson of Shreve- rt is out to make for himself a er name in broadcasting. ‘The broadcaster, famed for his anti- chain store crusades and his alleged use of the king's English, is seeking ‘around-the-clock” operation for his big station, KWKH, which now divides time with the Loyola University station, WWL, at New Orleans. Only last week he received authority from the Federal | Radio Commission to procure station KWEA, a little 100-watter at Shreve- | port, although he had been operating the station some weeks before the com- mission’s action. Would Oust Loyola Station. The Hello World Broadcasting Cor-! ration, which Henderson controls, has | ed with the commission this new | spplication for full-time operation on the 850-kilocycle channel, seeking to oust the Loyola station. The channel, in a choice portion of the broadcast band, has made Henderson's big sta- tion one of the most widely heard in the country, since it booms with 10,000 watts’ pcwer. A formal hearing will be held before the commission on this application. If the normal procedure is pursued, Hen- derson must show cause why it will be in the public interest to give him free run of the channel and force station WWL from it. The commission has sworn evidence before it ocmplaining against the broadcaster’s tactics. But t also has many letters and affidavits supporting the station, which has a tremendous following. Station WWL heretofore has not com- ined about Mr. Henderson. At a earing before the commission more than & year ago, when another station had applied for the 850-kilocycle chan- mel, it merely presented its own defense, without criticizing station ALASKANS FEAR RADIO BATTERIES WILL GO DEAD €Census Takers Find Residents’ Greatest Concern Is Over Failing Power Supply. CONTINENTS South American Capitals Are Connected With U. S. by New Lines. BY MARTIN CODEL. Not only are telephone subscribers of the United States, Cuba, Canada and Mexico brought within »u.% dis- tance of South America but o lis- teners of North America are insured a new source of broadcast mterm by uu inauguration of radio telephone service to and from South America. Just as Frederic Willlam Wile and Willlam Hard addressed the American radio audience from London during the Naval Conference, so all future 5&11- American conferences and events of mutual interest to the two continents un herenner be reported via the radio ';gne American journalists used the telephone company’s long and short wave radio l{lwm to carry their talks consistently from London to America to be brudcuz over the two Nation- wide networks. Now, for the first time, similar facili- ties are available from Buenos Aires, Santiago and Montevideo, the respec- tive capitals of Argentina, Chile and Uruguay. For tiu gllch'\-g‘o{ ordinary telej calls, whic! primary function of the new service, the South American radio taleghone marks another exten- sion of the vast system of telephony by means of co-ordinated wire and wireless services which is fast bringing all parts of the world within speaking distance of each other. It is now possible to call nearly all parts of Europe. The South American service extends throughout Argentina, but only to the capitals of Chile and Uruguay. It will be extended as fast as land line connections are completed in the Latin-American countries, prob- ably connecting Rio de Janeiro also before many months. A call from New York to Buenos Aires costs $36 _for three minutes: from New York to London the charge is $45 for the same period. The land line long- distance tolls are added for service to and from the interiors of the several continents. Buenos Alres, rgdio terminus of the new service, as Lawrenceville, N. J,, is| the connecting link with the wire sys- tem of this country, has been furnish- ing since last October direct telephone | service with Europe. The Internatior | Telephone & Telegraph Corporation, an American concern, operates the South American service. With the United States also planning extensions to Hawali, the Philippines, Japan and the Antipodes, other coun- tries have not neglected this phase of radio. The British have dectded to use their post office department’s beam sys- tem for a service direct to Canada via | Montreal. Holland regularly converses | with the Dutch East Indies via radio telephone. Japan has radio telephone plans in prospect. A current report to the Department of Commerce tells of a scramble for the wireless telephone concession be- tween London and Egypt, with British and French interests competing. Plans have been afoot for some time also for circuits between London and India and London and South Africa. It would be an easy matter to link all these circuits together for calls from American telephones to those of Egypt, India or South Africa. (Copyright. 1930, by North American News- Daper Alllance.)
