Fess’ Pronunciation Of ‘Kimono’ Blamed For Defeat of Luce By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 3—Dr. F, . Vizetelly, noted lexlco}nphcr. Tuesday went to the defense of Representative Luce of Massachu- setts, who trip] over the word “kimono” in the spelling bee at Washington last Saturday night between Congressmen and news- paper men. If the word had been pronounced _correctly, says the doctor, Mr. Luce would not have been spelled down by a scribe. Dr. Vigetelly in » statement said: “Senator Fess proved him- self a veritable crystallo-mancer. All in all, he proved himself a master of pronunciation, except 50 far as the word before which Representative Luce fell in defeat is concerned. The word is cor- rectly pronounced ‘ki-mo-no’ in the United States and ‘kim-ono in Japan, and had the worthy Senator pronounced the word as he should have pronounced it, without smothering the final ‘o, after the style of the English, Representative Luce would not have fallen.” Starts Law Practice at 85.
