NEW YORK, April 3.—Utility holding companies featured an irregular and moderately active curb market today. Electric Bond & Share moved within a fractional range as it was compelled to absorb short selling as well as profit- | taking. American Superpower and United Light & Power A inclined to- wards lower levels. Niagara Hudson Power, leader of the preceding session, was twirled vigor- ously again today. Traders bid the stock up in expectation of merger developments in the east. Eastern States Power B and St. Regis Paper reached record high levels on this movement while Niagara shares appre= clated more than a point. Brazilian Light & Traction rose frac- tionally following London cables indi- cating that American and Foreign Power had resumed negotiations for its light and power properties and International ‘Telephone & Telegraph has resumed conversations for its telephone plants. ‘These negotiations were broken off dur- ing the market crash last Autumn. Oils were slightly higher, readily ab- sorbing considerable profit-taking. Gulf Oil of Pennsylvania pointed higher, which was also true of Lion Oil and a group of Standard Oil issues, such as Humble, Ohio Oil and Vacuum Oil. Memphis Natural Gas was the first of that group to register a new high. United Gas, however, led in activity, with Lone Star Gas and the two Arkansas Natural Gas issues also ad- vancing slightly. Superheater rose to a new 1930 high before the regular dividend declaration. Powdrell & Alexander, whose sales have been improving, opened up 2% points. Novadel Angene moved to a new top for the year. Babcock & Wilcox was up 2'2 points. Consolidated Retail Stores was promi- ment in the chains as it moved against the lower trend and rose to a 1930 high, up 1'; points. Pilot Radio and Tube, advertised by the New York to Ber- muda flight, was whirled to a new peak again today. Anglo Chilean Nitrate. with improved operations due to new plants, advanced 2 points to a 1930 high. Newmont Mining was up about 2, as its 1929 Teport showed earnings of $23.35 a share against $15.25 a share on a small- er number of shares in 1928.
