Attainment yesterday by Capt. T. J. J. See, U. 8. N, of the age of 64 years, marks the separation from the active list of the Navy of a distinguished sstronomer. His conneetion with the naval serv- fce_dates back to the administration of President William B. McKinley, who inted Capt. See a professor of mathematics, United States Navy, on February 7, 1899, with station at the Naval Observatory here, where he was in charge of the 26-inch equatorial telescope from 1899 to 1902. He did notable work at the observatory in double stars and satellites. His work on the diameters of all the planets of the solar system and on the dimensions of Saturn’s ring s , by night and by daylight, to eliminate the effects of the irradiation, never previously defer- mined. was one of his outstanding ac- complishments. Capt. See terminated aetive service totaling more than 30 years, of which 10 were as senior pro- fessor of mathematics in the Navy and the balance as Government astronomer &t Mare Island, Calif. Discovered Cause of Quakes. Capt. See discovered the equatorial beits on Neptune and measured the parallax of the sun by the observa- tions of Eros. He has so many excep- tional accomplishments to his credit it is dificuk to point out any one that is outstanding. Perhaps his greatest scientific comtribution to the astronomi- cal world is his discovery of the cause of earthquakes and mountain formation. By using original methods, Capt. See found. shortly after the great earthquake at San Francisco that the f earthquakes and mountatn formation is the leakage of the oceans. He completed in 1916 by definite that the same cause has also be unsymmetrical, 1 the water in the isphere, with the in New Zealand. and nearly all the in the hemisphere having the opposite pole in England. jered Gets New Map of Universe. He is the author of about 30 volumes of re- searches, eight of which have not yet been published. Other volumes out- lined by him are not finished, and it is estimated that about 30 years will be required before he will eom&me them. For the next few years Capt. See plans extensive investigations.
