It was his particular wish—in buried wherever he died.” “Very well, sir—now you do as I say. Leave everything to me. You'll stay in the town until after the funeral, of course?” Engleden gave his questioner a look of Whlch Mallison was quick to see the meaning. “I shall stay in this town,” he said, “until we've laid hands on my uncle's murderers—however long the job takes. That's certain. You can count on my help, day or night.” Engleden went away without as much as another glance at the still figure, nt | around which Mallison and his assist- ants were gathered. He drove up to the Castle Hotel and asked for the llnd- lord. Christmas came to him, full of concern. But Engleden cut short all sentiment and expression of sympathy. “It’s done, Mr. Christmas, and nothing can undo it,” he said. “The thing now is justice on the men who did it. Here I stop until justice is done. You must give me the room he had and let me have a private sitting room. I shall have a lot of business to attend to. And to begin with and to be practical— breakfast.” As he ate and drank in his private room, Engleden thought of many things. To belln with, the death of his uncle had made a material change in Sefton Engleden’s circumstances. Col. mflle- den was a well-to-do man and Se! kne'l that everything had now passed Him. There was no need for any sllvlng at the bar, no need to do any- at all—he was now so wealt! that he could spend the rest of his life as he pleased. But that thought passed —if it ever was really there. He knew thag he would follow his profession as strenuously and with as much ambi- tion as if his daily bread depended on his endeavors and that he would wil- lingly have given every penny of the fortune now left him if the sacrifice of it could have restored Col. Engleden to life. No—the thought in his mind, as he sat in that quiet room looking out on the old town, was one of vengeance. He would never rest till the scoundrels who had tracked an inoffensive man down and murdered him in cold blood had been hounded down themselves and had expiated their crime on the scaf- fold. Their lives for his life—nothing and no less, He had meant what he said to Hamil- ton—he would remain till justice had been done. He was going to devote all his energy to this business. And he must have help—the help of a eool, calculating brain. Mallison and his as- sistants would doubtless do their best, but Engleden meant to supplement their efforts in his own way, and he must have a sharp, astute, crafty—yes, crafty, and even unscrulpulous man to | were assist him. What man? He did not ask himself that question twice. He knew the man—his own clerk, John- |and those schools of religious o son, was the very man. Engled had As duvltehea me following telegram to Johnson “Col. ln(lzden murdered, come im. mediately.” ‘The clerk who took over the message dlucr‘;:e glanced at him sympathetically. “"Deeply , sir, to hear of th'l flhe lrchbllhnp eorne in to be SOrTY, terrible news,” he said respectfully. hope it was no Bll’fl'llhul"h man, lir that would a disgrace! "Hme did not, sir. No, I never saw him again.” Engleden went back to the hotel and up to the room his uncle had neeuvbd Col. leden’s things were he left them. Engleden dmdedw IM any detailed examination of his uncle's belongings until Johnson arrived, except in the case of a small pile of letters on the dressing table. He sat down to look these over. Engleden put the letters and the tele- gram in his pocket and went down- stairs, intending to go to the police station. In the hall of the hotel he met | the landlord and stcpped to make ar- rangements with him about Johnson. That done, he drew Christmas aside. “Did you see much of Col. I suppose you have people staying here, as usual.” “We have a few people, sir. 'l'hmn | Mr. Adrian Mni'k the landsca) There's Gen. Pal lnd hil lady. There are two ladies, sisters—the Misses Maitland. Christmas took the envelope from him and, after a glance, handed it to ln(le- den. The message within, Engleden, was characteristic of Jahn- gn. 1t consisted of one word—com- honrs was busily occupled with Mallison and his men. He was still there when the afternoon came to an end. And at half past six he hurried down to the little rallway station to meet Johnson, who, despite the fact that he had been traveling t«r nine hours, looked as spick and s and as cool and imperturbable as hf were in Fountain rt. - He “‘Any news?” “There is no news, Johnson,” Engleden, “and there is no clue|” (To be aonunued) POPE GIVES AUDIENCE T0 ARCHBISHOP HANNA Receives Prelate From San Fran- cisco and Lauds Work of Church in U. 8.
