CHICAGO, February 20.—A warning that many communities are in danger of a disaster similar to that which recently cost so many lives in the Cleveland Clinic was sounded here yes- terday by Dr. P. F. Butler, radiologist, of Boston in a paper read before the educational council of the American Medical Association. Fumes given off by X-ray films that exploded and burned were blamed for the Cleveland disaster, Dr. Butler recommended that all hospitals install safety X-ray films, which he described as being no more dangerous_than so much office sta- tionery. His paper dealing with the requirement of & department of ra- diology in a hospital was read by Dr. E. C. Ernst of St. Louis. “Safety film costs about 20 per cent more than the highly expiosive nitrate film, but the added expense is good insurance against fire and explosion,” Dr. Butler said. Two physicians laid the blame for the high infant and maternal mortality in the United States on mldewte instruction in obstetrics, while a third, speaking at the obstetrics education meeting of the association, placed the responsibility on midwive Dr. J. H. H. Rowland, dean of the University of Maryland School of Medi- cine, came to the defense of physicians in obstetric cases, saying: “You find that most of the deaths at child- birth attributed to physicians first were ‘spoiled’ by & midwife.” MUSIC ROSA PONSELLE'S RECITAL.
