HOOVCX’ Beyond Ash Wednesday—Homelike Air at Executive Mansion Pleases. O Nation’s host and hostess, but by the time Christmas bells rang last week the Colonial mansion looked like its occu- pants might have lived there forever. There was scarcely ever such a thoroughly homelike air in the mansion, Christmas trees stand- ing outside the main entrance, a Christmas tree that almost reached the ceiling in the great marble entrance hall and another in the state dining room which sparkled like a pyramid of frost and dia- monds in its glow of electric lights and new-fashioned electric conceits. TH!RE were red flowers and red candles in the stiff and stately drawing rooms and even the corridor of the east terrace gleamed with Christmas lights and cheer. However, the old-fashioned tree in the front hall was the most interesting of all, its outreaching branches being hung with such homely decoration as graced Christ- mas trees a hundred years ago. These decorations were the con- ception of Mrs. Hoover, and there were strands of white popcorn, gingerbread men and horses, homemade stars, cornucopias and | horns; paper dolls and homemade toys, while mounted on an old- time rocking horse was a rag doll which has greatly amused the | older guests and will prove a mirth-provoking feature of Mr. Allan Hoover's dance party tomorrow night. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. RDINARILY the first season of an administration is one of ad- justment to the new phase of life in the White House for the ITH the New Year day reception opening the official program for 1930, events of great social import will follow rapidly up to Ash Wednesday, March 5, with the Army and Navy reception on the following night, a reception to the Departments of the Interior and Agriculture on March 13, one to the Departments of Commerce and Labor, March 20, and then a period of rest from routine official affairs for the Chief Executive and the First Lady of the Land. INVITATIONS for the reception to the judiciary went out from the White House last week, and on the night of January 9 the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Mrs. Taft will head the dignified line of justices, judges and others famous at the bar. The following week, Thursday, January 16, the Vice President will be honor guest at the State dinner and a week later the dinner in honor of the Chief Justice will be given. ANY social innovations were tried out in 1929, some of them so wisely chosen that they have come to stay and others were mere soclal misfits, un-American and even in bad taste. Large enter- tainments, those with a thousand guests, must necessarily be given in public ball rooms, but there will be decidedly a return to the home for smaller and more exclusive hospitality. The admission card will accompany all invitations and are not to be passed on by those invited but who cannot attend. hostess who invites her entire dinner party to attend the dance of another hostess will be out of favor after this season, and even asking hosts for extra invitations except where great intimacy obtains will not be quite the thing. In other words, hosts and hostesses will be permitted to choose their own guests. 'I'H‘!: Navy Relief benefit ball has for years taken place at the‘ Willard and both ball rooms are engaged for Thursday night when the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Adams will attend, all of the higher officials of the Government, the Navy and the mem- bers of unofficial ranks will tread a measure for the benefit of the helpless families of sailors. This ball has sometimes claimed the resence of Presidents and First Ladies in the past. The night | ollowing, the Army dance at the Willard will claim the attendance | of the Secretary of War and Mrs. Hurley. burg., Fla., early this week, where Mr. Coolidge will attend the directors’ meet- ing of the New York Life Insurance Co. | Representative C.
