NEW YORK, December 28—The reaction in stock prices, which started yesterday noon, was extended today, al- | though many of the early losses of 2 | to 8 points_were cut down in a late | covering movement. Tax selling and the usual " year end readjustment of | speculative “accounts were generally | held responsible for the heavy market. | Public participation was on a small scale, with little evidence of any ex- tensive reinvestment demand Leading brokerage houses presented & rather deserted appearance. Many customers, who were trading in 100 and 200 share lots a couple of months ago are now back in the odd-lot class or out of the market altogether. Profes- slonal traders, except a few on the “bear” side, .also have. sharply cur-| tailed their operations. Total sales on the New York Stock Exchange today were 1,634,510 shares. R. H. Macy, broke 8'2. points, pre- | sumably on uncopfirmed reports that the holiday. trade. had failed to come | up to expectations. Sears Roebuck fell to within 4 points of the Novem- ber low and then rallied. Allied Chemical ‘lost 7 points, Columbjan Carbon. 53, .and Delaware & Hudson, Texas & Pacific, J. I. Case and East- or_more, | United States Steel common shawed 8 net loss of 114 points at 1641, after having sold 8s low.as 1633,. Bethlehem Radio. General Motors, Chrysler, Packard. _International Telephone, Standard Oil of New Jersey, Sinclair and New York Central all showed frac- tional declines. 5 Foreign exchange trading was.quiet, with - chagges narrow and irregular. Sterling cables were. quoted slightly easier at $4.88'x. and French francs, which have been making new high records almost daily this week also eased slightly. On the other hand, the decline in Spanish pesetas appears to have been checked, at least temporarily. P WHEAT IN UPTURN - AFTER EARLY LOSSES (Reports of Good Demand and Clearings at Elevators Aid Market, By the Associated Press. ; s CHICAGO, December 28.—Material upturns in wheat prices here developed today after éarly setbacks. In tonnec- tion with the temporary downturns of wheat values' more or less prominence 'was given to Buenos Aifes dispatches saying that Argentins farmers were sell- ing-freely and were delivering Iiberally fo exporters at unfixed prices. Argen- tine exporters were said to be offering this: #heat abroad, -and causing depres- sion of the market at Liverpool. M»&n- while, export business today in wheat from North America was again small. On the other hand, messages from Omaha today said all cash grain houses there report that wheat is in good de- mand by mills, and that elevators are loading out more wheat than is coming n. The price basis for No. 2 hard wheat at Omaha was given 'as just about in line for exports by way of the Gulf “of Mexico. Simultaneously talk was current here today that European continental prices for native wheat have advanced sharply in comparison with Unlited States markets. 3 Close. 321 i3 1.361% Low. 124%, May ... i0'i3 . 1057 ° i6/i8 v 1062 January .
