PEN WOMEN HONOR MRS, RINEHART Writer Breaks Long-Estab- | lished Practice and Re- sponds to Toast. ‘Breaking a long-established practice of “being a writer and not a speaker,” Mary Roberts Rinehart, honor guest at the celebrity breakfast given by the League of American Pen Women at the ‘Willard Hotel yesterday, responded to a toast with a brief word of greeting and a single sentence which, as she pointed out, she “would have to say because it could not be written.” It is one of the ‘:-‘l’c :enunm t‘: th: English language wi cannot be pul into print, through no need of censor- #hip, but because to write means taking liberties with orthography, thus—"“Two, to and too are three kinds of ‘tews.’™ Anyway, that's what Mrs. Rinehart said, as nearly as it can be reported, in the first speech she has made in more than a decade. “And,” she concluded, “even if one should attempt to write it, once written, it no longer would state @ fact, for then there’d be four kinds of ‘tews.”” Holiday Spirit Pervades. A holiday spirit pervaded the break- fast, which was presided over by Mrs. Bonnie M. Busch, national president of the league. Dr. Jason Noble Pierce, guest speaker, confined his remarks to a New Year message of hope and good cheer based upon the observation that ‘while all must face difficulties and fail- ure in their human relationship, out of failure itself sometimes comes life’s eatest success. “Mrs. Nina S. Reed, book review chair- mman, gave brief reviews of three books and presented their authors. These in- cluded “Pidgin Cargo,” by Alice Tis- dale Hoban; “Tidewater Virginia,” by Paul Wilstach, who injected a breezy humor into his remarks, and “Your Happy Day,” by Agnes Greene Foster. Represéntative's Wife Sings. Mrs. David H. Kincheloe, wife of Rep- resentative Kincheloe of Kentucky, con- Christmas songs and Negro spirituals. Mrs. Reed announced that three wom- en had tied for first honors in the con- test for the best reasons why one’s fa- vorite magazine was the favorite, as a result of which each of the three would be given equal awards—subscriptions to their chosen publication. The three winners were Mrs. C. C. Calhoun, Mrs. Evelyn N. Sherrill and Mrs. Victoria Faber Stevenson.' Homorable ‘mention Was given to Miss Eleanor Shutt and Miss Olivia Moreland Lloyd. The.state- ments were confined to 20 words. . PERSHING IS ASSIGNED __ NEW OFFICE QUARTERS General Given Rooms. Once .Occu-, pied by Sherman, Sheridan, Schofield and Miles. In order that Gen.
