Abbott, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, former director, was elected vice presi- dent. SETTLEMENT MADE IN ASSAULT CASE Alexandrians Compromise Differ- ences Which Caused Attack in Fairfax County. Spectal Dispatch to The Star. FAIRFAX, Va., December 5.—The trial of Everett Taylor of Alexandria, charged with assault on James Lucas, also of Alexandria, Sunday night on the River road in Fairfax County near Fort Hunt has been called off and the case compromised. ‘Taylor, who was | given a hearing Tuesday in Fairfax !had asked for a trial before a full Justices’ Court and this was set for Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Later Robinson Moncure of Alexan- dria, who represented Lucas, eed to a compromise settlement, whereby le-' Jor was to pay all damages to Lucas’ car amounting to approximately $125 and other court expenses including the fees for both attorneys. ' Taylor was represented by T. Brook Howard of Alexandria. ‘Taylor was arrested by Sheriff E. P. Kirby, late Sunday evening on a war- rant sworn out by Lucas and taken to the Fairfax jail from which he was later released on $1,000 bond. It was alleged that Taylor cut Lucas and Miss Dora Downey on the head and face. CONTEMPT WARRANT FOR NORMAN S. BOWLES Former Washington Lawyer Sought on Charge by Court at Baltimore. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, December 5.—A bench warrant for Norman 8. Bowles, a for- mer Washington attorney, for contempt of court, was issued yesterday by Judge William C. Coleman in United States District Court. Representing himself as a Washing- ton attorney, Bowles recently acted for Other occupants of the car were un- injured. Thomas Knott, who pleaded guilty to charges of violating the prohibition act and was fined $200 and costs. After the trial Judge Coleman con- versed with Bowles and the latter made statements contradictory to those made while representing Knott. Suspicious, Judge Coleman investigated and learned that Bowles had been disbarred in ‘Washington after being fined $5,000 and serving two years in Atlanta on a fel- ony charge. . Bowles was ordered to appear before Judge Coleman last Monday, but failed to do so. Entering a cellar containing a large quantity of fermenting wine, a wine grower of Grosswinternheim, Germany, was overcome by the gases and died before help could reach him. |DOG DENIED PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC RIGHT BY JURY Marylander Loses Damage Suit for Death of His Canine in Auto Mishap. Special Dispatch to The Star. BALTIMORE, December 5.—Holding that dogs crossing the street have not the same rights as pedestrians, a jury yesterday brought in a verdict for Mr. and Mrs. James T. Harris ending the suit against them by Willlam J. Cassidy, who sought $15,000 damages for the death of his Chesapeake Bay dog, “Bob.” The dog, Cassidy alleged, died from injuries received when the Harris ma- chine struck it on July 16, 1928, in front of Cassidy’s home. The dog, he sald, was very valuable because of mo- tion picture possibilities. It had, he said, saved three lives, 75 Auto Accidents in November. LYNCHBURG, Va., December 5 (Spe- clal) —Seventy-five automobile accle dents occurred here during November, according to the report just made by Richard F. Wagner, director of the Public Safety Department of the city. Property damage in the accidents was fixed at $4.673 by the report.
