RECORDS BROKEN BYCOASTCUARD More Lives Saved and More Ships Aided Last Year Than Ever Before. ‘The “war” of the United States Coast Guard with “lawless elements” secking to smuggle intoxicating liquors into the United States was only one of many activities of the old service, whose op- erations involved in saving life and property from the menace of the sea, according to the annual report of Rear Admiral F. C. Billard, commandant, broke all records of the past. More lives were saved, more Dersons rescued from peril and more ships of greater value were assisted in emer- ncies in 1929 than in any previous al year, the report emphasizes. Grant, 3d, director of public buildings and public parks, that the animals are being cared for during the present cold spell. The program wlil be continued through the Winter, with raw uts for the squirrels and scratch food for the birds, the colonel explained. In response to a letter written M. B. zlrzlimu of 2123 I street, Col. Grant “I am pleased to inform you that this (f g of squirrels) is an item of routine work of the park division of this office. Every year approximately 2,000 quarts of raw peanuts are pur- chased, and distributed by employes of this division and the park police. In addition to the peanuts we purchase and distribute, approximately 600 pounds of scratch food for birds, & part of which is consumed by the squirrels. The feeding is confined to the la: parks in order to concentrate the squir- rels in these open areas and to prevent as far as possible the migration to the smaller squares located throughout the city, the idea being to prevent the squir- rels crossing heavy traffic streets, which would necessarily increase death rate by automobiles. In spite of our efforts to concentrate the squirrels in the larger parks, we have recelved numerous complaints from people living adjacent to the parks that the are nesting in the attics of thelr houses and in some cases destroying materials stored there. “Just recently it was ne to transplant & bed located in one of our parks and the workmen found approxi= mately 1,000 peanuts buried in the bed, which shows that the squirrels are not only adequately fed, but have sufficlent excess to provide for any . possible shortege of food during the Winter menths.” coasts are to bhe adecquately guarded | against this unlawful traffic, so 2s to, meet all the needs of the situation, the rd the | ization of the Re) ent WASHINGTON, D.
