The Sidewalks BY THORNTON One day we went to the railway station to see some friends off. Just as they were passing through the gate a wedding party appeared. Withcut warning two pounds of rice were show- ered at the bride and bridegroom. most of which lodged in the hats and clothes of those who had nothing whatsoever to do with the wedding. Of course, the scattered rice pro- vided a job for one of the cleaners. “Boss,” he said, “dey ain't throwin’ so much rice nowadays. He was re- turneA to the house for .epaits, and re- msined there long enough to miss the train for which the 4 couple had obtain- ed reservations. *x & The lonesomest bridegroom we ever saw was a tall lad who took his bride to Bermuda. Two of the roughest bits of water in the world are the Eng- lish Channel and the sea between New York and Bermuda. The young bride- groom failed to inquire if his lacy love's constitution was sturdy enough 1o take the punishment administered by a pitching ship. Most men engaged in public work are the recipients of such missives, which, while not partic- ularly offensive, usually convey a sting. In some cases the letters are slan- derous and are sent to innocent per- sons for the purpose of arousing | suspicion. In this respect they may prove to be laden with danger. When directed to the “principal” himself, they usually extract a chuckle and find a place in the waste Why a normally lnlemsem person will take the time and spend 2 cents for a stamp to send an anonymous “dig” is beyond a sensible man's com- prehension. * ok ok ok A certain radio performer, whose voice and personality intrigue the femi- nine listeners, evokes a groan from the men. Why is it that certain movie stars who are favorites with women arouse disgust in the souls of their own sex? Men may like women, but they infrequently like the men women like, if you get what we mean. ‘The late Rudolph Valentino appealed to female spectators. Among man movie- goers Rudy wasn't such a riot. And yet those who knew Valentino, among thzmuuwfl'er.meethn.hcmu two-fisted a fellow as ever lived. Val- entino was conscious of this feeling against him and often referred to it. This stand is made of iron and fits closely against the wall, the half tub- shaped base making this possible. By imagining that you have removed the six little pots of flowers, you will see that there is an iron tree of grace- ful proportions left. On each branch is a holder for one of these pots, and the beauty of these is that the design and color of each pot is different. Can't you see how much more interesting this would be than to have the monotonous effect of all green, yellow, blue or red pots? This tree and base may be fin- i1sned 1n black or dark green, the pots tional designs in contrasting shades. (Copyright, 1929.) Everyday Psychology BY DR. JESSE W. SPROWLS. How 01d Is Psychology? Somewhere in the archives of lmn- ture one finds a story of the devel ment of each of the sciences. story in any case is called the history of the science. Taking histories in general, there are two kinds—"lies agreed to” or “stories of disagreements.” 1In the case of €Y | psychology, it's one grand story of dis- agreements.
