2 % THE EVENING STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1929. Byrd Would Have To Carry California Route, Brown Says As one cabinet officer to an- other, Postmaster General Brown has informed Secretary Hyde that Comdr. Byrd would have to be employed as a mail carrier if the rural route from Sattley City to Sierra City, Calif.,, is to be continued. This route, Mr. Brown wrote Mr. Hyde, will be abandoned be- cause it takes 30 horses, when there is snow on the d, to get the mail up 5 miles of the road where it rises 2,000 feet in that distance. Mr. Hyde had written Mr. Brown that several forest rangers would be getting their Christmas cards very late if the route was discontinued. It is now ad- vertised to run from Reno Junc- tion to Downieville, Calif., where the snow is not so deep.
