It has been reported to market deal- ers from time to time that the number of visitors here this season has prob- ably been greater than during most heated periods. Market business has kept up rema * ably well during the vacation seas Everything Specnally g 4 Roars, "ae e o . Yesterday's rain was given a hearty | Hfj 1 ) B reception by dealers in fruits and _ . tables, more especially the latter, o E hope ‘was expressed that there wauld » be no' cessation of the downpour for the next day or two. It was reported o i that several sections of Maryland and ¢ i = Virginia were visited by rain Thursday \s " S " K % night, but it was of short duration, al- though growing crops received some benefit. Absence of rain the past month played havoc with growing crops in nearby and distant States, according to reports received by local wholesalers, a — sending prices of some commodities far £ e ——— above prices usually prevailing at this | JHi 2 season. Both the potato and tomato crops were seriously affected and prices. I ~/ & i > = : == > (4 / soared. - | i P 3 i . Growers on the Eastern - Shore Of‘ I\ - i Maryland and Virginia, where so many potatoes are grown, have been unable this year to supply the local trade any- thing like the quantity of the vegetable shipped here last season, and prices Testerday, around $6.50 and $7 & barrel, ‘were approximately three times as great as last year's prices. Tomatoes Are High. ‘Tomatoes, usually sold at less than $1 & bushel at this season of the year, have #old around $3.50 and $4 a bushel the past week or more and, according to dealers, rain is the only thing that can rescue the growing erops. Should ‘weather conditions become more favor- able and the late crop turn out good, dealers say they will find much satis- tacuon and forget prevailing conditions. g‘relt trouble with the average consumer sald a wholesaler, “is that lhe%lhlnk high prices mean much more e prockets of the sellers. “Such, however, is not the case,” he added. “When prices are high it always is necessary to cut margins, making business of both wholesalers and retail- ers less profitable. “This rule,” he concluded, “applies to the handling of practically all food- stufs.” Cheaper l]amb and chickens were the interesting features of last week's mar- ket, while prices of most meats con- tinted at the prevailing high mark of the past few weeks. Decreases in the price of Spring chickens resulted from much heavier receipts, and dealers con- tinue to complain that so many very small chlclena are coming from the several poultry-raising seetions. “The small’ and poor ‘chickens,” ‘obe served a dealer, “are never in demand and have to be sold at prices far below prices of <the larger and fatter chickens.” Should Keep Chickens Longer. Tt “was suggested by the merchant| that raisers would benefit from: keeping the chickens longer and that consumers would be better satisfied even if higher prices were demanded for them. Poultry dealers continue with sup- plies of turkeys for the hotel and lun room trade, .!.lle's during Sl;'n;u'ner & = sons the past few years ing mucl heavier than during similar periods years ago. There has been a shortage of water- melons most of the season. When the first melons reached here from Georgia they came in fairly large quantities, and cheap prices prevailed for a short riod. ~Receipts soon became lighter, K:wever with prices steadily advancing, and this week dealers received choice | i} | % & fruilt from ):o;tlh c;“;ll“;; that found | Hii \ L, 1 5 ¥ A ; ready sale af an tides Cantaloupes came in such large quan- g = £ tties that prices dropped about 88 low - : e A FIBER STROLLER e T murof the ‘et : s g . R Dealers at Municipal Fish Market had supplies of marine products, more than ample to meet demands throughout the week, most of the fish coming from the North and Cheasapeake Bay and tribu- taries. Practically no fish were re- ceived from the South. Hard crabs continued plentiful and ‘cheap throughout the week, and soft crabs were more plentiful and cheaper than the preceding week.
