{ BYBLUELARKSPUR 6 e | TfiE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D..C., AUGUST 4, ]9‘.’9-T’AR"D 5. TENDON IS PULLED Three- Year-0ld Champion Receives Serious Sethack in Workout. BY ORLO L. ROBERTSON, Associated Press Sports Writer. EW YORK, August 3.—The bril- liant turf career of Blue Lark- spur, champion of the three- year-olds, received a setback today with the announcement that the great son of Black Servant- Blossom Time, from the E. R. Bradley stable, had pulled & tendon in a work- out yesterday at Saratoga. He was to go after his fifth win of the season today in the Miller Stakes as a warm-up for the more important engagement to follow, August 17, in the Travers Midsummer Derby, when he would have again met the best of his age. After pulling up lame, following a stiff workout, his trainers announced that it was doubtful if the pride of | Kentucky -would be in shape to race | again this year. Caruso Reverses Decision. The running of the United States Hotel Stakes—the first of the rich events for juveniles at the Spa—saw ‘W. R. Coe's Caruso reverse the deci- sion of the opening day, when he was beaten by Gallant Fox in the Flash. Picking up 12 pounds, the Coe colt stood a long drive gamely to win by a length and a half from Gallant Fox Hi-Jack, George D. Widener's promi: ing youngster, finished third, the same as in the Flash. Caruso stepped the six furlongs in 1:12 to put $14.000 into the pocketbook of his Wall Street owner. STARS AND BARS has been meeting with some suc- cess in his recent efforts. He was un- fortunate not to win the other day. While he must show considerable im- provement to hold the top one, he seems | to have little opposition for second money. CURATE is capable of doing better than -his. last would indicate. Dangerous off his best races. MAYBE suffered bad racing luck in ‘his last start. While he did not ap- pear to have any chance of stoppirg the winner toward the end. he was forced to take up when closing plenty of ground after a slow break. With a more alert start Monday he might be hard to beat, BROADWAY LIMITED, one of the highest priced yvearlings to be sold in this country, makes his first appearance in this field. Whether or not he is ready to crack down with a winning race remains to be seen. THE SPARE ran a good race in her one apearance here, although beaten. She is capable of breaking into the first three with another like that. LACE is evidently the class of the field of fillies in the fourth. She showed some impressive races at the beginning of the season, but her last few are not eny too encouraging. STREAM LINE whipped somewhat the same kind of a fleld in her first start here. It was a ‘distinct improvement over her previ- oys form, but if she duplicates that ef- fort she will prove a stubborn miss to overcome. MA MIE gets in light, and her recent races show her to have a fighting chance. There is nothing that Jooks like a standout in the fifth. Practically every one has & chance. When it is all over t might be RUBY KELLER. She has shown good form of late and she seems to_have enough edge to give her the call ‘over DRAWING BOARD. The latter has raced consistently all year. He is dead fit and should prove the one to beat. PUNISHMENT moves up a peg after two wins over cheaper ones. If he continues to improve he might do it agam. All things considered, TAOS is the solid hazard in a very open race. He has been racing consistently with good ones, and although DUNROCK outfin- ished him here the other day, his good form makes him the choice over the latter Monday. Dunrock was & ‘Thi to trim a tough Id.l but he could not withstand the win- ner’s powerful rush.
