THE SUNDAY STAR, WASHINGTON, D. C, AUGUST 4, 1929—PART 1. HUGEJEWIH STAT . PLANNED N RUSS Territory to Embrace Biro Bidjan District, Located in Southern Siberia. The largest Jewish state in the world 1s soon to be created in the Biro Bid- jan district of Far Eastern Russia, ac- cording to recent news dispatches. Biro Bidjan, or Birsk Bidjany, as it was once known, lies in the Amur River region north of Manchuria, China. It | is in Southern Siberia. “Not long ago every geography text book presented Siberia as a dreary, treeless, waste fit only for exiles.” says & bulletin from headquarters of the National Geographic Society. “The very name ‘Siberia’ conjured visions of long lines of prisoners moving across bleak tundras, their ranks being dech mated by wolves and bears and the whips of their taskmasters. Land of Mineral and Fur Wealth. “Nothing could be farther away from the reality of Biro Bidjan than this vislon,” the bulletin continues. “The Amur Province, in which it is located, is larger than France and con- tains almost as varied scenery as the United States with the exception of the semi-tropical Southern States. True there is one high, somewhat bleak plateau, but there are also many fer- tile plateaus in the region. Marshy lands contrast with {all-wooded ranges and treeless plains with magnificent forests. Much of the scenery along the Amur River may achieve notoriety for its wild beauty when the country is bet- ter known to the world at large. “Nor is perpetual snow a character- istic of the region. Often for months during the Winter there will be no snow at all, although the temperature is seldom higher than 20 degrees below zero. fortably warm. Gold Mined Extensively. “There are rich agricultural districts in the province and gold is mined ex- tensively. much, but there is an abundant sup- ply. The forests are filled with game: bear, tiger, sable, panther, wild boar, deer and wild goat. Tigers are killed in a novel way. A kid or a dog is tied to a stake at a spot on which a gun is trained, being secured to a rest placed at a little distance. The hunter con- ceals himself behind some foliage and r when the tiger ap- ne. The natives make bipes upon which they play a note re- P Pnbling the cry of a kid when they hunt mountain goats. “Amur Province has one large city, Blagoveshtchensk, the °‘City of Glad Tidings,’ with a population in excess of 55,000. It has wide streets and some modern buildings. Practically all the houses of Blagoveshtchensk are made of wood, some being elaborately carved and others ornamented with large rings or triangles of wood nailed on the front of the house at regular distances. Stoves Built in Walls. The stoves in the houses are built into the wall from the floor to the ceil- ing. As the front is flush with the wall they look like decorative panels with their highly colored tiles in various de- signs g“Thfi Siberian likes to wash his face and nands under a thin trickling stream of water and usually scorns a basin or tub. In some inns will be found a brass receptacle hanging on the wall and ending in a nozzle at the bottom <o the visitor can wash under his de- sired trickle. > “The Amur River, which separates Amur Province from Manchuria, can Ccnly be navigated about six months a vear. In Witner when it is frozen there is much sledge traffic over its icy sur- face—not all of it under customs super- vision. In the Summer the numerous islets which dot the river form colorful pictures with their fringe of white sand beaches and brilliant foliage and flowers.” Fight at First Sight. The “cichlids” of the fresh-water carp family are said to be among the most ferocious of fish. They are quite difficult to mate and have to be kept separate, for they fight and kill each other with little delay. When they are once mated, however, they take great care of their progeny. A flower pot or hollow stope is found, which they clean spotlessly and in which they raise their family. They guard their eggs in al- ternate shifts, fanning them with their fins. Just before hatching, the female digs a pit in the sand or shingle and transfers the young fish to it. They are then a wriggling mass of black jelly. After two or three hours she digs an- other pit, and this process goes on till the youngsters can swim about. Germans Used British Tanks. Latest German World War photo- graphs received at the Imperial War Museum in London gave Britons & shock when they revealed that Germans used captured British tanks against the British, In one photograph these tanks are seen being prepared and recondi- tioned in German workshops. In an- other the same tanks are shown manned by German soldiers, in action against the British. Two Women Ride Garbage Wagon and Recover Lost $82 Search at Newark Dump Reveals Crumpled Envelope. By the Associated Press. NEWARK, N. J., August 3—Two women rode through town Thursday perched on the driver's seat of a gar- bage wagon, and at the end of the ride —which took them to the dumping grounds—one of them recovered $82 which she had inadvertently put in her garbage pail. Mrs. John Viparino hurriedly gathered together the garbage when the garbage collector called at her home. So swift- 1y did she work that she swept into the pail an envelope containing $82. When she “discovered the loss she called a neighbor, Mrs. Meyer Schlank, and ex- plained her trouble. After a conference the women started after the wagon. The driver told them he thought he knew where Mrs. Viparino's garbage was located in the wagon, but stated she would have to wait until he reached the dumping ground. The en clambered aboard the wagon and rode to the dump, whére, after a half hour sifting, the crumpled envelope was found. The women took a bus home.
