THE SU. EARNS 3YEAROLD TITLE N QUAGMIRE Covers 11-2 Miles on Slip- pery Track in 2:324-5. African Is Second. BY ORLO L. ROBERTSON, Associated Press Sports Writer. EW YORK, June 8.—Shades of the Kentucky Derby, shadows of a great 2-year-old ducl flashed around muddy Belmont Park today as Blue Larkspur | splashed his way to victory in the Bel- | mont States—America’s premier 3-year- old race. | Running on a turf that resembled the quagmire at Churchill Downs Derby day the son of Black Servant and Blossom Time, owned by E. R. Bradl dispelled all fears that he is not a great horse. A going that was more slippery than muddy. made so by rain of the | last 12 hours, found Blue Larkspur at his best. He' stepped the mile-and-a- half route in 2.324-5, only two-fifths of a second off the sensational time | hung up by Chance Shot in 1927 and by Crusader the preceding vear. | One length back of the fiying hoofs of the Kentucky colt was R. T. Wilson, jr’s, African, an outsider coupled with Dr. 'Preeland, the Preakness victor, in the betting. And then came George D. Widener's flashy Jack High, 5 lengths in the rear of the Wilson coit. Furnishes the Shadows. It was Jack High that furnished the shadows of the great 2-year-old duel. | Last year the flashy son of John P. Grier ‘was Blue Larkspur's greatest rival for juvenile honors and again this year a contest appearéd to be under way when the Bradley standard bearer fin- ished a half length in front of him in the Withers. But today all doubt was dispelled as 40 which is the greatest colt. The pride | of the Biue Grass State was unbeatable. | By his sensational performance he can lay claim to 1929 3-year-old honors. ‘The victory was worth $59,650 to the Idle Hour Farm owner. Astride the mighty son of Black Serv- ant, who had lost none of his popu- larity by his poor showing in the Derby, was Mack Garner, who has been boot- ing home winners for more than a dec- ade. And Garner rode the kind of race that Blue Larkspur likes. He held him on the rail until the field had hit the mile turn. Then he swung him along the inside content to let him race along with Beacon Hill, African and | Jack High setting the pace. Meets Late Challenge. But the turn into the stretch saw ®Blue Larkspur move up fast on the inside. A mighty cheer went up from the crowd of 50,000 as the Bradley hope cut down the lead of Beacon Hill, stride by stride. As they hit the final furlong pole Blue Larkspur burst into the lead and there he stayed, fighting off with ease the challenge of African in the last sixteenth. Beacon Hill tired rapidly and fell back, finishing a length back of Jack High for fourth. Sunvir was fifth, Live- oak sixth, Sun Hatter seventh and Dr. Freeland eighth. As Blue Larkspur was crowned lead- ing 3-year-old of the year, Harry Payne | Whitney’s Crazy Coot came forward to | win a leg on the juvenile championship by taking the National Stallion Stakes from a field of 13 2-year-olds. W. R. Coe's Keep On was second, with H. M. ‘Walker’s Cymbal third. The race was worth $25,740 to the winner. CAPABLANCA IS SLICK. Jose R. BEST—AMSTERDAM. ‘There is & lot of class in the first | for a field of maidens. More than one | of these better than the average. Let's | 80 all the way to the bottom of the list jand try LADY GOSSIP. She has been | burning up the clockers’ watches with | her trials. She had a race in fast com- | pany recently to ready her, and she looks ready to graduate. The mud-run- ning NELLIE LYONS is apt to prove the one to beat. Barely missed nosing out real fiyers in a recent effort in the slop. Off of that will be a stubborn contender. DR. PARRISH may hold on with more courage. Rates fairly | close up. GOLDEN CHESTNUT, a full | brother to the fast Roguish Eye, makes his first appearance here, Might prove dangerous. Nellie Lyons, Dr.| HERETIZ will encounter more oppo- sition from this field than she did in her recent winping effort. Neverthe- less, that last performance was accom- plished with so much ease that she seems to have a fair edge over the com- pany in the second. DONORA has | menaced fair ones several times. She is improving with racing, and the edu- cation she has received should enable her to take second money. MABEL BASIL is certain % be a contender. Rates well up with this sort and off | of some races could be dangerous. Do | not believe Perfect Alibi will be a men- ‘}lcer.g; slow footing. Dangerous if track Now that AMSTERDAM finally has | found his way into the winner's circle, | we may expect to see him there often. | Looks ‘as though he is due to drop | another purse in his book Monday. | His recent races give him a wide call | over the fleld in the third. VANDAL | has been doing well with _slightly | cheaper ones. His good races show him | a mighty fit youngster, and he may | be better than generally rated. Just | & _chance for him to surprise. DIS- | | TURB has not yet raced to best form | at this point. Capable of sharing in this purse. If he runs his race, may be a serious factor. | S | CONGO II would be hard to beat if | he got muddy going. Some of his re- | cent races make him look so much the best that he may be able to score over any sort of a track, but in mud do not | believe there is anything in the fourth to menace him, Of course, he must run his race to do it. CHUM has two wins to his credit. Taking on just a bit tougher opposition this time, yet those last few races make him very dangerous. POLLYWOG has been rac- ing honestly. Not worse than second last six starts. Figures with the lead- ers again Monday. Just how good is this SILVERDALE, anyhow? He has beaten about all there is to beat among the sprinters, and now he is going after the handicap perform: | ers.” "Six stralght wins stamp any animal as a real racer. Have to give | him the call over the fleet BROADSIDE. Latter has shown some mighty keen races this Spring. Well suited by route, it will take a good horse to beat him. ROYAL JULIAN would be best suited if the gbing is muddy. over fast going. so he must be in splen- did shape. * Certain o be a keen con- ender. Won two races | | | Another close fit in the sixth. TAKE OFF scored in his first start here in fast time. He will find a great deal more speed in this group, but he should | be able to repeat. SYDNEY graduated last time in an easy win. Moved to the leader when ready and drew out. An improving youngster that will have a Iot to say about the result of this race Then there is UNCLE MATT, a bear in mud, to consider. Been racing right up with the best of them in all his races. May be able to upset our figures. ‘The last may find POST HORN on top when the finish is reached. Less speed to contend with here than in any of those flelds he has been meet- ing. Has run few bad races and looks as though he is capable of trimming these. LOUISVILLE LOU, of course, will be the main contender. Very fit, and her races at Churchill stamp her @s a troublesome filly. McCULLOCH | should be at his best over slow footing.
