At the half the win- nerled 3 to 1, HAGEN GETS REVENGE FOR PAIR OF DEFEATS like a sclentist and prepares for his matches with the thoroughness of an explorer outfitting for a polar expedi- tion. Cotton knew every blade of grass on the Surrey Hills, where the match was played and he porfited by his knowl- edge. He also was very friendly and courteous to his American opponent and on a number of tees there were little scenes that would have warmed the hearts of champions of Anglo- American amity although it is unlikely that such courtesies will become general in golfing circles such as matches between Hagen and Compston. Whenever the youngster reached a difficult dogleg hole or when Smith seemed uncertain of the topography, Cotton would show him the correct line to hole and warned him of hidden dangers. Cotton’s Parents Proud. However, the Englishman couldn't help Smith much this afternoon when he began to drive wildly and send his seconds into the rough. Cotton had to let him go his own way to rapid de- feat after the match was squared at the nineteenth hole. There were no prouder parents in England than Cotton’s white-haired father and mother, who were there to congratulate their son. As far as the elder Cotton is concerned, anybody can be prime minister, but there are few that can beat Smith 6 and 5. ‘While Smith was losing to Cotton on one range of Surrey’s Hills, Dudley and Farrell were adding a few dollars to the American team fund on an adjoin- 1.grnb another purse Monday. KENTUCKY BABE also is rounding to form. DOWAGIAC is a fit colt and should turn out to be the one to force the issue. Was prepped in Maryland and was ready to win when shipped out here. He scored at the first ask- ing and he has only the top one to put away to do it again. However, do not believe he is good enough for that. BEAUREGARD is fast finding his winning form. A fast colt, his re- cent races suggest he will have to be reckoned with. The sixth is about the toughest field | of the day. All are evenly matched and all dead fit. VIMONT is the same game colt he was at Havre de Grace. Gives all of them weight, and must run his race to beat them, but he seems to have a slight edge. FINNIC should go well this way weighted, and taking a line from his recent win, will prove the one to beat. TAMINA scored over good ones last time, and she must be given a place near the front. Very open race. HELEN E. seldom runs a bad race. A mighty consistent filly, and as honest as they come. She comes to this race fresh from a winning effort over as goods as these. Her consistency gives her the call over the good ONUP. The latter also scored in her most recent start, and off some efforts could give the top one a hard race for the purse.
