Capital Residents Linger In City Despite Approach Society Well Represented at Recent Gatherings —White House Events of Importance Listed Schedule of Week. BY SALLIE V. H. PICKETT. HAT Washington is not a deserted Capital over the week eny was shown by the fashionable crowds that thronged St. John’s and other well known churches for the various weddings that took place here yesterday. The President failed to fulfill pre- dictions made by his friends for a Virginia fishing mg and last night there was a small and informal dinner company in the mansion, the sister and uncle of Mrs. Hcover being almost the only guests. RS. HOOVER, who will return to the White House tomorrow from Philadelphia will give two receptions during the week for Con- gressional women. She arranged this brief series cf teas, the first of which was given last week, along more intimate lines, feeling that she could much better enjoy individuals than by asking all the ladies of the congressional circle for one big event. This same feeling of hospitality pervades the little dinner and lunchecn parties that are so frequent at the White House now, and instead of merely fulfilling official duties there is a genuine home-like air to all social events. F course the guests at Mrs. Hoover’s tea last week wondered why they were not entertained in the Califcrnia garden, and the MRS. SETH W. RICHARDSON, With her husband, Assistant Attorney General Richardson, living at 4436 Klingle road. ‘Underwood & Underwood. MRS. BARNETT, UNOERWOOD & UNOERWOOD Wife of Maj. Gen. George Barnett, U. S. Tuesday after- noon, June 11. Mrs. Frederick E. M- reason was that there is no California garden at the White House. | For a fact the President’s temporary abode is of such a national nature that the First Lady of the Land would probably hesitate to| localize it, while, however, she cannot help but bring to it much of | the luxuriant splendor of her own State. It speaks much for the progress of women that the President's wife travels away by herself | to attend the semi-centennial of one college—Radcliffe—and tomor- | row will receive a degree from anothers-Swarthmore—and in the | meantime visiting and adding to Girl Scout interests. | INNER parties in plenty arc interspersed with such delightful | affairs as the reception at the Panama legation Friday by Mme. Alfaro, wife of the Minister, who is absent, and the Charge d’Affaires and Mme. Chevalier for the United States Minister to Panama and | Mrs. John G. South. The party there was not nearly so general as several given in the embassies and legaticns this Spring, only dip- lomats and officials and a very few society folk being invited. ’I'HE Ambassador of Great Britain and Lady Isabella Howard are only carrying on socially with their official program, having cur- | tailed all unofficial events on account of family mourning and to- morrow night they will give a dinner to celebrate the birth anni- versary of King George. They will linger long in the vicinity of the! Capital, taking' up sidence at Langley Park, the estate of Mrs.!| Frederick McCormick-Goodhart within a short time. WEDDXNG bells ring merrily and each wedding seems more delight- i fully arranged than its predecessor, the marriage of Miss Eliza- ! peth Ives and Mr. Lowe yesterday in quaint St. John’s Church oni Lafayette Square being as refreshing as a day in June itself, in the: dainty green and white coloring that predominated. All other social | affairs must give way to bridedom throughout this entire month and large or small the weddings show an artistic trend that is new and lovely. 4 Miss Davis Is Listed :Socicty “At Homes" | FOI‘ Debut Next Sea!on‘ Formally Announced‘ Miss Emiscah Gale Davis, daughter| Maj. and Mrs. Parker W. Pretty Wedding Ceremonies Guests at Luncheon Mark Early Summer Season tertained Today by Dr. and |June Maintaining Reputation as Month of Brides. Society Interest Centered in Recent Charm;ng Matrimonial Evcnts. June, the month of brides, was ushered in yesterday with more than a half dozen truly beautiful weddings of mare than usual interest in the Na- tional Capital. One of the most interesting nuptials on the day's calendar took place in historic ‘St. John's Church, Lafayette square, when Miss Elizabeth Laura Ives, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. James E. Ives, became the bride of Mr. James Rowland Lowe, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lowe of Grand Rapids, Mich. Johnston, rector of the church fa- officiating, assisted by Bishop John M. McCormick of Grand Rapids. The church was filled to its capacity with representative society folk of the Capital and many out-of-town guests in the large assemblage. The bride was escorted to the altar by her father who gave her in marriage. Her wedding costume was exquisite, fashioned of ivory satin, along grace- ful princess lines. The gown was made with long fitted sleeves and touches of rare old rose point lace added to the beauty of the dress. The skirt fell into a circular train at the back and was several inches shorter at the front. A cap of lace corresponding to that on the gown held the very full tulle veil and the bride's bouquet was of white orchids and gardenias. Mrs. Roger Wolcott Converse of Boston, was matron of honor and the other attendants were Mrs. Montgomery Blair,_jr.. Mrs. William Draper Blair, Miss Gythia Stourton and Miss Eleanor Hard. Bride's Attendants Handsomely Gowned. The attendants' costumes, with sim- plicity prevailing in the design, pre- sented an unusually striking effect. The bodices were made with clinging capes which fell over the arms and were fin- ished at the front with tiny bows, and the skirts were of soft circular flounces, slightly shorter at the front than in the back. The attendants wore picture hats of green transparent straw, slippers to match, and they carried arm bouquets of Spring flowers. Mr. Edward Lowe, jr. of California, was best man for his brother, and the ushers sclectec. included Mr. Josiah Philips Evans, 3d, and Mr. Luclus ]I)Ouglass Tompkins of New York; Mr. | Lorraine, to Mr. Miller T. Penc Edward Lowe Greene of California, Mr. Mannix Walker and Lieut. Tighiman H. Bunch, U. S. N, Mrs. Ives, ‘mother of the bride, was in a blue and white chiffon gown with which she wore a blue lace coat and hat, and Mrs. Lowe, mother of the bridegroom, had on & gown of green (hiffon *fashioned along. softly draped ines. A ‘reception for the wedding party and out-of-town guests and tiember of the families followed the ceremon at the home of the bride's parents, 1 Rhode Island avenue. The bride and bridegroom left im- mediately after the ceremony for New York, from where they will sail shortly for & wedding trip abroad. When the return in September they will mak their home at 1713 R street, the house which is now occupled by the coun- selor of the French embassy, Count de Sartiges.
