Health Service yesterday said complete reports of the influenza outbreak in- dicated a total of at least 705,385 new ! cases throughout the country during { last week, a “decided increase over the previous week's spread.” ‘A larger increase in number of cases % may be expected, he added, as the crest of the wave of the disease continues to . move eastward. However, he did not ! view the situation with alarm. The estimate of 705,385 cases Was| based upon actual reports of 141,077, cases. Reports for the previous week | showed 40,520 cases, or an indication | of at least 202,600 cases. Shortly after Surgeon Gen. Cumming called the convention to order a lay delegate offered what he termed a prac- tical solution of the problem of radium painting. C. H. Granger of Waterbury, Conn., vice president and superintendent of the Waterbury Clock and Ingersoll ‘Watch Cos., declared users of luminous paint_could avoid poisoning by remov- ing all brushes from their plants. He explained that his companies began to use radium in 1924, and when they suspected there might be a danger from painting with radium they immediately started examination of girls who had been doing this work. “We found that in every case in which a girl showed radium activity, she had put the paintbrush in her mouth,” he continued. “We substi- tuted ste€l dies or a stylus for the paint- brushes.” Granger contended that such substi- tution was the only remedy for the sit- uation. Scientists and others attending the conference, however, saw a large prob- lem. Dr. Alice Hamilton of the School of Public Health of Harvard University, a prominent industrial poison investiga- tor, suggested htat the conference map out what ought to be discovered about the many unknown properties of radium, and that problems be assigned in groups to Government departments. ment, labor unions, and industries | WRERERER | Budweiser Beer doz.$l£‘ | Bl pend) e 25¢ | Rock Creek | Ginger Ale . | Randall’s iGrape Juice .. .qt. | | | National Extra Pale | \Dry Ginger Ale §%un 73(:: | Canada Dry Ginger Ale . . . .doz. $2_L§3 | Cigarettes | Carton of 10 Pkgs.
