The white man's laws, both civil and criminal, would be extended to all the Red Men under a bill intro- duced today by Representative Cram- ton, Republican, of Michigan. The measure would apply particu- larly to restricted Indians on Federal reservations and would abolish the tribal courts. Judges on reservation court benches, however, would be se- lected by the restricted Indians over which they shall preside and the State laws would te applicable where the offense is not a violation of & Federal statute. One of the provisions of the act which would interfere with customs of some Indians in the Souti.west where a squaw divorces her husband merely by placing his belongings out- side the door, is that which would make it compulsory for the Indians to comply with the marriage and divorce laws of the State in which they reside. Superintendents of In- dian reservations would be author- ized to issue marriage licenses. Bailey to Lecture on Art. IWILL! I...me. And do you know why? D1l tell you. We’re getting an Orthophonic Victrola for Christmas. It’s a present from us . . . to us! Billy and I are giving it to each other, if you want to put it that way. We’ve wanted one ever since that night at the Cottingtons’. We never have heard such music before or since, except by living performers. I suspect the Cottingtons thought we were never going home. They played and played and we stayed and stayed. You would have sworn the singers and musicians were going to step right out of that Victrolaand chat with us! I mean, they sounded so real you could close your eyes and imagine yourself at the opera or the concert or a smart supper-club. Billy and I talked it over on the way home that night. In fact, we could talk about nothing else. We decided we were going to have an Orthophonic Victrola if we had to sell the family plate. - Christmas seemed . like the best time to have it delivered. Holly and good-will and good times and all that sort of thing, you know? Then, too, Billy said the stores would be apt to have a better assort- ment around Christmas time. We picked out a beauty. In fact, they were all so good-looking, it was hard to decide. But this one took our eye and it’s all settled. We’ll have it for Christmas morning. (I can hardly wait!)
