LIBRARY 1S GIVEN MANUSCRIPT FUND Oscar G. Sonneck, Former Official of Institution, Makes $5,000 Bequest in Will. Paying an unusual tribute to a Gov- | ernment stitution, the late Oscar G Sonneck, from 1902 to 1917 chief of the division of music, in his will has bequeathed $5,000 to the Library of Coggress for the pitrchase of an original manuscript_of Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven, the library an- nounced today. In addition to this gift, Mr. Sonneck, who has put his residuary estate in trust for the benefit of his immediate relatives, has left to the library a share in it. to become available at the termi- nation of the trust, when the personal beneficiaries have died During Mr eck’s connection with the library he organized its music sec- tion into an effective division, and built up a collection which, under his hand, came to have a world-wide reputation, not only as one of the largest in ex- fstence, but also because of its scholarly content. While engaged in this con- structive work, he produced a of printed catalogues and monogray to which he brought expert knowledge, prodigious industry and unflagging en- thusiasm. There is probably no center of musicology which, bibliographically, is without obligation to him. Work Far-Reaching. For the Library of Congress, the results of Mr. Sonneck’s achievements were far-reaching. Upon the founda- tions laid by him rests, in a sense, the musical foundation recently est. lished by Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Cool- idge for the benefit of the music divi- sion, and the Coolidge Foundation, in turn, has led to other endowments of | the library and to the creation of the Library of Congress Trust Fund Board When Mr. Sonneck resigned, in 19 he did so after long resisting the i ducements offered by an’ unusual busi- ness opportunity, in which, however, his great abilities were still unfolded for the good of music. After his re- | moval to New York his interest in the | library continued to a marked degree, and was like the devotion to the col- Jege shown by a faculty member who had served for many years, or that of an alumnus for his alma mater. His editorship of the Musical Quar- terly gained for him the acquaintance of the present chief of the music division, Carl Engel, and it is now known that Mr. Sonneck recognized in Mr. Engel the solution of the problem which his own resignation had pre- sented to the library. Gained Annual Gifts. As secretary of the Beethoven Asso- eciation, Mr. Sonneck took part in se- curing the action which resulted in the association’s annual gift to the library of a sum of money for the purchase of rare editions or manuscripts. Mr. Son- neck’s bequest is, by his direction, to have a similar use. Other previous governmental officials . . The usual dinner will be served. { Plans for carrying the campaign over | the holiday od will be one of the matters discussed. The fund now i only $50.000 short of the $100,000 goal, and campaign leaders are confident that the remaining $50,000 can be raised among the business men in Washing- ton after the close of the Christmas ! rush season. | Three of the city’s leading business organizations—the Board of Trade. the Merchants and Manufacturers’ Associa- tion and the Chamber of Commerce— near Washington, and campaign lead- | ers are looking to their memberships for support. Thus far, however, less th $10,000 of the $50,000 contributed has come from the business men, it was | |said, as members of the Lutheran | Church have pledged about $40,000. As soon as Washington raises the |$100,000, according to Dr. William J. Showalter of the campaign executive committee, campaigns will be started in nine Eastern synods of the United Lutheran Church to provide funds for erection of the college buildings. It is | planned to break ground for the col- lege next Summer and to have the first | unit ready for occupancy in 1931. = .
